I have a simple question, what exactly does the SP GEM grade mean? I cannot seem to find the answer, not even on PCGS' website! An example of a coin that has been graded SP GEM: http://www.apmex.com/Product/68306/...an_Maple_Leaf_Dragon_Privy___SP_GEM_PCGS.aspx And the same coin but graded SP 69: http://www.apmex.com/Product/68302/...ian_Maple_Leaf_Dragon_Privy___SP_69_PCGS.aspx Based on price and description, SP GEM seems to be "inferior" to SP 69? But where exactly does it stand? Thanks in advance!
Per PCGS Glossary: "Gem Adjectival description applied to Mint State and Proof-65 coins. It also is used for higher grades and as a generic term for a superb coin. Gem BU Short for Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. Gem Unc Short for Gem Uncirculated. Gem Uncirculated The adjectival equivalent of Mint State 65 or 66. SP Short for Specimen Strike."
Thanks Derrick for pointing me to this info! I'm new to coin grading and am wondering why they didn't just grade this as SP 65 or SP 66? Is it because these are merely "average" grades - ie, is "SP Gem" just a nice way of saying "sorry, not good enough to make MS 67/68"? Basically I'm wondering what is the benefit of buying SP GEM graded coins vs. buying the coin raw? I guess when buying raw, unless you buy directly from the mint (or in mint-sealed lots), you are likely getting the leftovers after the best ones have been cherry-picked and sent off for grading. Also, I suppose the PCGS holder does have some value.
