Heya all Just wondering what premium a bar like this would carry? 50oz bars are kinda rare I can't seem to find any similar to this for sale. There is one 50oz Engelhard on Ebay. but i think the seller may be a touch optimistic  so whats it worth at spot of $32-33 Aud? anyone got any ideas? thanks
I would be very happy paying spot, but it think its probably worth a bit more, better if it was 10 x 5 ounces or 5 x 10 ounce bars
+1. I'd reckon with spot +$80-$100 for a "generic" bar. If any additional premium because of age/maker then you're in the realm of eye of the beholder stuff.
YOU'RE SPOT ON IMHO! IF you can find a the right Stacker that keeps large quantities on hand, I'm SURE this bar would command a fairly hefty premium. As everyone else has mentioned: "The Smaller The Better" is the case in MOST Stackers minds but it's this very reason that will make this bar EVEN MORE RARE. 50, 100 & 1000oz Engelhard Silver Bars were the realm of either large investors or Industry (such as Jewellers, Makers of photographic consumables etc) at the time these bars were made Engelhard (while it was still a company in its own right) was primarily concerned with supplying Precious Metals for Industry. As a result of this, combined with the relative age of the bar MOST BARS THIS SIZE WOULD'VE ALREADY MADE THEIR WAY INTO THE SMELTING FURNACE FOR ONE PURPOSE OR ANOTHER. As with EVERYTHING, if you can find the niche market for it, this will UNDOUBTEDLY sell well. (*In fact if I hadn't already committed myself to other bullion purchases I'd probably make an offer)
well I thought this thread was dead =P thanks for the info FraterArgentum =) I guessed it maybe of been rarer, hardly ever see any 50oz Engelhards only on US Ebay. And thanks YPS ill pm him.
Wow, I just stumbled across this - at time of posting it's at $625/oz! :O ebay-4oz early Engelhard There's seems to be quite a passionate market for rare old Engelhard's. Ebay is probably the way to sell if you ever wish to unload.
yup There has been a few 4ozers go for silly dollars on US ebay. The 3oz, 4oz, 7oz all got major collector value from what I've seen. thanks for the insight =)
Yep, I am holding onto my 3oz Engelhard for the time being. Amazing how a chunk of silver gets collector premiums lol
Hmm, unless this whole rare Engelhard "fad" is actually a front for Chinese corruption? http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-32064-what-drives-the-chinese-art-market.html
I think your bar could have a higher premium as the design is one of the earliest (as there is no letter on the serial number) and it is a pretty uncommon size.
Vintage poured bars of all makes are doing very well in the U.S. High demand. They've become a niche market.
Doing well so far http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360497928747?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360497929381?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Not many Harrington's around but a few Engelhard bars around on fleebay
Sorry if this not directly related to the question as I assumed the question is already answered. Do you know how these bars are doing in the US? (still sealed, made in 1984 earliest minted Engelhard bar as there are no letters in the serial number)
Also I can't remember where I heard this, but my understanding is that the earlier bars are hand poured and when silver started to raise they started minting/extruding bars as a more efficient method of producing silver. Would that be right? or would it be that technology improved and it become the normal way to make it?
I've seen similar going for around spot + $7 an ounce. The vintage hand poured is where the prices are getting really high, especially from mints that no longer exist, some going for 2x - 3x spot. I don't know if this is going to be long-term or not, but it has a lot of dealers excited at the monthly show I go to.
