What do you think about NZ mint after its 'successful' design change in the popular white shark coin? My image of NZ mint was a decent little one draw a number of audiences for its occasional impressive design and fancy packaging, but wouldn't sell. Even that piece of positive image collapsed recently when I saw the ugly change on the white shark. It reminds me an opposite case, Opal series by Perth mint. How to combine opal with the animal images might not be a smooth path. So the design team worked hard through trial and error until they were able to release the successful end product. Well, RCM was not so successful on its recent glow in the dark series. But at least they produced some as per design. Look at NZ mint! They posted such elegant image probably done by photoshop a year before its release and sent their sales team out everywhere for marketing. What was their design team doing by then? I guess they simply believed punching the coin would be the easiest step and they never did any test before until the deadline approaching? I just CAN NOT believe it. I cannot believe they finally changed the fierce teeth mark to that by a shark wearing denturesNow I understand why their product wouldn't sell...and I feel shame on you!
Few discussions on this as one of the site sponsors was taking orders for them but some changed their minds after seeing the modified version http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-29552-nz-mint-great-white-shark-coin-modified-page-1.html APMEX still have the first design up so guessing they're unaware of the new design. Would be very unimpressed if I ordered off them and received the modified release. Not a very nice design methinks, especially in comparison to the original. Pity
I'd also like to quote what NZ mint say as follows: (i just wondered how dare he can use some words, such as perfected, extremely confident???) "Dear Valued Customers of NZ Mint, I am writing with a further update for you on our Great White Shark 1oz Coin. I am pleased to advise that after much testing our production team have now perfected the bite marks on the coin. I attach for your reference a photograph of the first strike coin and also a graphic representation. You will note that the coin now has 4 bite marks. We are extremely confident that you will be very impressed with the innovative design and high quality production of this coin. We will be dispatching the finished product week commencing 15 October 2012. Once again I sincerely apologise for the delay in this coin product, and trust that you will be very satisfied with the finished product. Kind regards, Simon Harding Simon Harding Chief Executive New Zealand Mint Limited
Is there any chance the group buy orgnizer here is able to convey our anger to NZ mint? I really dislike their overconfident attitude.
I did order some koi and shark. Canceled shark after I noticed the ugly change. Not from here since i could not make wire transfer. I paid much more eventually to an US dealer. I noticed angry customers blamed group buy orgnizers or web dealers where they bought these coins for nonrefundable deposit. But I think it is not their fault but NZ mint. Very dissapointed with NZ mint.
thank you Maggie. As one of the big group buy leader, I believe you are willing to pass all the complains on to NZ mint.
Not keen on paying non-refundable deposits for anything. Seems computer generated images of items is a cause for consternation. I prefer to see a pic of the real thing, but even that may not show its actual appearance due to angle or lighting.
I think NZ Mint should put there prices up by 25% to compete with Perth Mint or 100% to compete with mongolia mint.. 1for1
OMG, why...why....& why the change it...... stupid thing to do. i am a big fan of NZ mint design, but this time i really dissapointed.
I totally agree with you. There could be tolerable difference but not major one. Anyway, I'd like to show you another picture which was the testing (not the end product) in the process. I guess it is a real picture. I'd rather they stop punching the poor shark now though I ever believe the bite mark was the most attractive part of the coin. What a pity!
I thought you guys already know it and keep quiet since you are okay with the change? Or seems like I am not the only person who gets into frustrated...
ever tried punching small holes in to thicker metal ( 1oz coin thickness) close together ? not very easy to do !! without compromising the metal. i also think that while the small holes may have looked good on a drawing on the coin they were probably lost and with that the effect. pretty sure this sort of hole making has not been done on a coin before so in theory may have seemed easy but not so in practice. lets wait till these coins are in hand before making a final judgement ? to me the small holes looked more like a mullet had been sucking on it
