What do you guys think if we all commission the coin from Perth Mint

I have the idea for awhile now ...
Want to have a series of Perth Mint made zodiac signs silver bullion coins (repeating Russia`s zodiac signs series - search on eBay there are some)

How much would it cost to order the lowest mintage for the lowest price?

Any ideas?

And what's wrong with the Russian ones that Perth Mint could make better?

No idea what PM would charge but going abroad would be the cheapest option from what I can gather, depends whether you are after cheapness or Quality with a well known brand name.

sold as a part of series, with 1 oz 999 engraving and being legal tender

the only wrong with Russian series is impossibility to get the whole series and the coins being heavily overpriced .

I say we use the most backwards metal-meltie-guy we can find, Gumtree is a great place to find these sorts of 'artisans'.
As long as the rounds come out sort of circular, mostly flat and are mainly aluminium, atleast 51%(we need standards!), we should be doing alright.

Aluminium would be my metal of choice, AFAIK used drink cans do readily melt in just about any wood fire.
The metal-meltie-guy would of course be the one to talk to about such decisions.

rounds, bars, etc is not an option ... my personal preference is coin, with legal tender ... and it is better be australian ))

Zodiac signs on a coin? Count me out of that. What about instead a high relief series celebrating the craft of making great silver coins? Different coins in this series can depict the different aspects like a scene depicted of the mining of the actual silver process, the smelting process, the sculpting process, etc, etc, etc.

I don't think anyone has ever come close to designing a series depicting such an integral part of what we all benefit from....owning wonderful silver coins/medals.

 

Volumes are high, as are premiums. That's why you don't see commissioned coins from the PM all over the place.
You need big volume, expect around $15 over spot per coin and then you have to buy the die which will run between $1500 and $2000. Then you need a decent artist and sculptor to make a mockup die so the mint has an idea of what you want.

I looked into this a couple years back, it's a huge gamble, when it's all said and done you probably need to mint and sell 5000oz to make any decent money (at prices not many are willing to pay).

For sure. You would need to pick something that would have appeal to stackers unless you intended to sell them offsite. You could try a Kickstarter campaign, that would give you an idea of how popular the theme would be.

Zodiac does nothing for me. I have often thought about what I would like to see on a coin, so far nothing has had enough appeal.

The only thing that has tempted me would be to produce something similar to the cob coins, or hand hammered coins. Just buy the dies and hammer to order.

From a financial point of view it might not be viable but if you wanted to see something you designed on a coin then this might be a good way.

 

I think this is an awesome idea! I had thought of the idea, but 10,000 coins at spot price would be $193,000 which is a bit expensive for me right now lol, have to add Perth Mint's premium as well.

Capsuled coins from Perth Mint, 1oz, 1 design released each year. Russian Brown Bear. 10k mintage on each year. each year has a different design.

I understand that Perth has beautiful coins, but why does it have to be from perth? The beauty of the coins depends on the die and the sculptor. Then you can take that die to any other private mint for cheaper. In the US, there are several good private mints that are willing to do custom work.

 

I think most of us prefer coins than private mint silver rounds, I do not recall US Mint does commission jobs.

 

Yea, I am not a fan of rounds. And coins being legal tender tend to have a higher demand. But this is probably expensive.

It's probably far cheaper to find a private mint to mint some rounds as they will probably have a lower minimum order. Downside is that the rounds won't sell as quickly as Perth mint coins.

 

Then is it possible to commission a private mint to make the die, then send the die to perth to make the legal tender coins?

For custom rounds, anyone can design and have any mint make them. But for coins with face value, is there some sort or regulation, law, or license we have to go through to have them made? I think if we are going to do coins rather than rounds, we'd have to find this out first.
