Just interested to know what the next big thing is gonna be, stay with Lunars, kooks, koalas or are you a slabber and grader, Aussie decimal currency, are there any little sleepers out there low mintage etc etc if you could give one word of advice to your children what would it be?
I think sovereigns will have a renaissance - I'm stacking them for my kids, trying to weed out the QEII English stuff, and focus on M/P/S mintmarks, or any QV sov. I'm in the middle of flipping premium stuff for extra ounces at the moment to bulk up. Having a hard time putting 1oz gold Dragons on the market though!
$200 coins and $10 state coins are a good hoarding coins I reckon, and you gotta have some 50's for liquidity
Well if Australia is getting richer then there is more disposible income for people to waste on on hobbies, so numismatic items would be good, real numismatic items, not PM pad printed rubbish. When you look at other hobby/investments like phonecards or stamps, just before the bottom droped out of the hobby they flooded the market with countless numbers of special editions, limited editions and a different set every week. The mints are doing the same, already there are too many 'commemoratives' commemmorating things that no one cares about. Probably not worth buying any more, even if you think it might be the next red back. Perth Mint has shown that the notion of mintage limits is a guideline rather than a rule. Bullion coins (kooks, koalas, lunars) at issue price are a safe bet for going up on the secondry market. Anything popular before the recent dragon hype will be popular after it. If Australia takes a hit then there won't be much buying or selling going on, so you need a good supply of things you will need that will be in short supply. Not necessarily bullion. Shame to sell your bullion to buy coffee and toothpaste! I am buying the 10oz Dragons while they are still avalble at cost price, I will buy the limit of 1oz snakes when they come out, and then the 10oz snakes. Bullion/collectibles, best of both worlds
I prefer the larger sizes as well Jislizard. I don't really understand the 1oz thing. I'd love a stash of better quality sovs and i love the world gold coins, esp. the european gold coins. Anyone want to sell me a nice French Louis 20 Francs i'd be interested.
1966 50s go like hotcakes on both here and e-bay ... and at a premium to spot (unlike pre or post) ... I just hope that continues
If the recent Downies firesale of 1oz proofs at $40 is anything to go by... I still have phonecards from the 90s before Telstra destroyed the hobby through greed Dinosaur packs worth $600 now worth about $5, less than the face value of the now-defunct cards.
