    Yes, that is being emphasised in the news articles, with the implication (for the general public) being that gold is a dumb investment and one favored mainly by terrorists and extremists.

    Of course he was. For philosophical and religious reasons add well as practical ones. Turned out it was hard to stop financing even if you control the banks when you can send a fedex of high denom. Euros, dollars and gold. The two "drivers" that were with him at the Abbattobad compound were selling gold odds and ends to fund the otherwise basically disconnected cell.

    There's long and not surprising history and association with everyone from downed pilots to real agents and those who run them with gold. Not news, not a conspiracy to associate gold with bad things, just common sense that's been "news" since the 1930's or earlier.
