Hey Stackers, just a bit of trivia. One of my mates is marrying a Vietnamese lady this year in Vietnam. He told me tonight - don't bring a gift - tradition is ca$h or GOLD!! Looks like I'll be on the lookout for a nice gold bullion gift.
So just give them a receipt for a couple of grams of gold and tell them you are keeping it safe for them. Back in the old days they would pop the receipt into the oven before they handed it over. That way it would crumble into dust before anyone could redeem it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinplaster
Just a tip buy it over there from a gold shop in the area where they live and get a receipt from the shop. Normal gift is a 1 chi ring for a wedding or cash in an envelope. Usually gold is given by close Family members and friends who are in the wedding party. If your just bowling up for the food 500000 vnd in an envelope will be fine. Traditionally the 1 chi ring is used as cash if needed at some point so a receipt from the shop is a must. Most gold shops engrave the makers shop name inside. 1 chi 3.75 grms about 150 USD. You can buy 96, 98,999 18k, 22k,24k. enjoy .
I see "cash or gold" excludes silver. If he's a very close friend, you gotta buy a larger, more special piece. Perth Mint Lunar series can be great. A rare horse/snake/dragon... would be beautiful. If he's a really really close friend - best friend etc. etc. - then you must buy the 1 kg gold coin!
