We absolutely love unusual modern coins and this latest from Tokelau fits the bill perfectly - the Shark Tooth coin!

In 2011 Tokelau designed its entire exclusive economic zone as a shark sanctuary, thereby protecting over 30 species of shark, so this new series is a perfect theme to come from this pacific island nation. The first in the series, issued in 2014, features a striking, clean design of a Great White Shark, and contains a fossilised shark tooth inside a specially created capsule within the coin! The obverse has been specially designed to incorporate some nautical elements surrounding the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Great White Sharks are fearsome predators who live in the surface coastal waters of the world's oceans. They can grow to 6m in length and are said to be able to reach speeds of 40km per hour and have no natural predators apart from Orca. They have three rows of sharp, serrated teeth, that can number in the thousands - no wonder they strike fear into swimmers and surfers when they appear near popular beaches!

Only 1000 of these fascinating coins were made.

We'd love to hear about your favourite unusual coins!
