Hi Guys, I am after some info about a silver 2c piece. I found it while moving house, I have had the coin since I was a kid, Cant remember where I got it just thought it was lucky. Anyway started looking into the story and found.... Mistakenly Printed 2 Cent Australian Coin? I have a 2 Cent Australian Coin that was wrongfully printed in silver instead of bronze, I have checked with the Australian mint and it is genuine, after it was verified the mint informed us that the coin was made but a disgruntled employee, he made a few of the coins but the mint stopped most of them from entering circulation, they where melted down but they missed 15 of them, only nine have ever been found and mine is the ninth coin, what they couldn't tell me is what it may be worth, if anything. If anyone knows or knows where I could find out I would really appricate it. Thanks The mint want $200 just to look at it. I would be happy to post some photos if somone could give me instructions on how to upload them into this post. I am more interested in the story than the value, unless it is authentic!
OP says 1967.......Can we see a picture of the Obverse? Please. This sounds great.....picture first but.
They had one at downies a couple of auctions ago - went for somewhere around the $600 from memory. malachii
Most likely a plating trick using Zinc Sulphate or something. Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g_ml8tAnWE
I have considered this. Unfortunatly I don't have priveladges to upload the picture. I would be happy to email it to somone who can????
It looks like it has had significant circulation. Highly unlikely a coin so different would pass through many hands before someone snatched it just because it was different. I'm also thinking plated get it XRF tested to confirm
It is funny, this has also been said to me. It looks like a scuffed 5c piece when holding it. Somone even suggested I scratch it on the ground to see if there is Copper under it. Well that would answer the question.
Hi Can you take a picture of the coin without any light on the coin. if its possible without the flash so i can have a good look at it. To summit a picture click the IMG button then insert your link in between the img] insert here [/img Source: James
Looking at the coin I would think it has been plated as well. Were there silver planchets available at the time that met the requirements of a 2 cent coin, or was it possible to source a planchet from elsewhere. XRF if possible and do specific gravity test (?) maybe if that is enough to show differece between copper and cupro nickel.
A guy contacted me about this coin late last and came into see me only a month or two ago. It is in my opinion that the coin was plated and not a genuine, and for that reason I passed on purchasing it.
I have a brass plated copper cent from America which I pulled out of circulation! Actually it was given to me in a bag of change from an American tourist who stopped by our shop for coffee. We caught them slipping quarters into the change when they were paying and as they were state quarters we told them we didn't mind, when they left they gave us their loose change. Anyway, they were modern 1 cent coins, 96% zinc with 4% copper plated onto the planchette. Apparently, during the plating procedure some zinc blanks fell into the plating bath and slowly dissolved. The next batch got plated with a mixture of copper and zinc. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm Add to that, I have received florins in change from a Coles. People don't really look at their change so this sort of thing could go unnoticed for a while, particularly if it is roughly the same size as a 5 cent. But chances are it is something a bored person might do for a laugh.
