A question for the knowledgeable - The 2012 silver Dragons from Perth Mint came in plastic coin protectors, 20 of which are wrapped in what appears to be shrink wrap plastic. This plastic is hard but appears brittle and has a hole top and bottom (was a sleeve before heat treatment I suspect). I intend to leave this plastic sleeve intact simply because it keeps the coins in their protectors neat, easy to handle and unscratched. Does this add or subtract from their secondary market appeal? There appears to be much ado about unopened "monster boxes" but does that much ado apply in this case? Your thoughts/opinions would be educational.
I think the general consensus is to leave them together as long as possible. This is cos loose coins are 1. Hard to stack 2. Get scratched, the covers. 3. Lost/stolen borrowed 4. Easy to store in safe together But maybe that's just me.
The shrink-wrap is actually pretty strong and yes, it does come as a tube before being shrunk to fit the coins. Leave the rolls as they are unless you desperately need to break them up. People do weird stuff with loose coins like take them out of the capsules and rub them on industrial carpet so a sealed roll comes with a fair bit of integrity as and when you go to re-sell it.
I always take the shrink wrap off, makes them much easier to stack up. I dont think the shrink wrap adds anything to their value. If it does for some unbelievably bizarre reason, it wouldnt be hard at all to get them shrink wrapped up again in years to come when you want to sell.
Same. Being paranoid, I like to take the shrink wrap off and check I've gotten all the right coins--imagine if you thought you had a tube of Dragons, and then 10 years later you unwrap it and the centre is all Kookabooras, or even worse, Koalas I keep mine in medical cotton tubing, it can expand to hold larger coins or a roll, and also provides extra padding. I've received rolls in shrink wrap from Aurora et Luna and other dealers; I assume you can easily buy a gizmo to do it for you if you choose.
hi Phil I try to sell some professional good looking coin plastic case on fourm next mouth, I will offer you a discount^_^
Also if you get a scratch on the capsule it doesnt matter that much, you can replace them for under $1 if you're really concerned about it. The capsule is there to be damaged so the coin is protected. Long as the coin remains untouched, its all good.
Good point. So, handle with those white cotton gloves Maggie is selling and don't breath, sneeze or cough and have no children in the house while changing the capsules out.
staring at them long enough has been known to cause scratches and toning, so use 100 % UV resistant sunglasses
Cos they're dragons I'd keep them all A1 in the wrap Generally for coins I buy under a roll so they're loose..so when I get a roll I tend to keep them as a roll, its just easy to store and move with out them scratching the cases.
yes, handle the coin with cotton gloves but realistically this will only need to occur once in a worst case scenario - if a capsule becomes scratched and you want to replace if prior to sale one day.
Anyone that hasn't seen the dragon coin in real life.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raiVXtBe2bs Not my video.. (my voice is sexier )
No guys - nothing special just the regular, everyday coins purchased on 01 Sep. My "L" plates are still up with respect to the more artistic side of PM stacking!!
