How exactly are private messages sent between members "stored by Big Brother?"

He can't give you details because he's too scared to do more research

Boneyard. What you posted in Post 1, I believe in 100%.

I have experienced some weird happenings lately on my computer..

Recently I received a PM from a member of SS who is well known by you all. I remarked to him that I hadn't seen him posting lately and he gave me a reason which I will not elaborate on here.

When replying to his PM I happened to touch on a subject which has lately been on the news in an indirect way. As I was typing the PM, the screen suddenly went blank when I typed in what I now consider to be key words that triggered the blackout,

No I was not drinking or on drugs..It was very scary for someone like me you is not an expert on IT.

I no longer feel free to post on particular issues.

I feel that SS was a free and open forum but I can no longer come to that conclusion. It could well be that this site is under the eye of some other organization.

All I can say is that I agree with boneyard that we are indeed being watched.

    Regards Errol 43

There are steps that can be taken to ensure privacy in private internet conversations.
Although... I'm not sure a recipient would be up for decrypting and/or encrypting messages unless they also share similar concerns.

errol43 what you write above implies that there is some sort of realtime filtering happening, monitoring your keystrokes for certain words, taking action based on what it finds.

I know you are a nice guy! But what is the more likely scenario? My interpretation above, or maybe there is just a problem with your PC? e.g. malware etc.

I have been in IT all my working life, and I have heard it all. Really, I have.

My in-laws are completely IT-illiterate, I'm on the father-in-law's mailing list for "OMG THERE'S A MEGA-VIRUS CATEGORY 1 THAT IS ABOUT TO HIT PCs OF THE INNER-SOUTH OF BRISBANE!!!1!!1!one! THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY BRISBANE CIB, DETECTIVE SERGEANT SMITH! TURN YOUR PC OFF NOW!!!1!eleven!!!" warning emails. I then get a phone call from him, making sure I received the email and have read it.

I work with people who are involved in network security, I know what is possible and what is not.

Yes I agree it pays to be paranoid, but I am also evidence-based :)

Imagine being privy to all the information just on this site, they would need bots (& they do) to do all the filtering for "key" words & content combinations that set off flags for humans to be bothered to even begin reading.
It really would be a mammoth task or take a very long time just to even monitor 10% of what's going on let alone understand it.
I think the new laws being proposed suggest that information must be kept for 2 years (?). Just in case it is needed, then the records can be examined when needed.
That's a lot of extra data space.
Telco's (which it is aimed at) hold data for 28days as they do not have room. But the government will make them by law & that cost will be passed onto us the consumers etc
I really do wish I had time & ability to supply reference links because I sometimes get things wrong. But this is how I seen it.

Rbaggio. I assure you that there is nothing wrong with my computer..Has been working fine except for that one incident that I am aware of. The word I typed was vir... and refered to a minority religion here in Australia.

If you work with people involved in security, maybe you could get them to check out the SS site.

I certainly can not give you any proof of what happened, I wouldn't know how.

Two of my sons are very good with computers, I will get them to check out my computer when they next come home..The oldest one has a degree in IT and every time he comes home he checks it out for me. Has pretty good safeguards built in and have never had trouble with a virsus.

All I know is that it shook me to the core to think of what happened for no apparent reason.

The screen remained blank and I have a 24inch monitor of late vintage..It was not a connection..I switched the compute off, rebooted and it worked fine.. Will never talk about religion anymore even in jest.

    Regards Errol 43

Sorry Errol but that's just not the case.

I'm always "poking my head under the hood" into the code. There's no malware on this website or unauthorised access logged in the server.

I apologise errol. I don't really want to make light of your angst. I just like the passage and it seemed like a good time to crowbar it in to the conversation....

Only way to be truly anonymous on the web = surf from an internet cafe using email account and username that you only use from cafes and not at home.

Sad then that many internet cafes are closing down now due to people using smartphones instead.

This is a good guessing game.....although I'm stuffed on it.
