Didn't know whether to put this in the non-PM version as it is mostly glass... For those of you so inclined, the chemistry behind it is here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1911633612/plated-potions-science-meets-shiny which is also where I picked the silver mirrored coke bottle in the first place. Sadly there are no real practical applications for a silver mirrored coke bottle but he is running another Kickstarter if anyone wants one https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1911633612/silvered-soda-souvenirs?ref=users
Here's a video that shows exactly how Tollen's reagent (diamminesilver(I)) is made and subsequently reduced with glucose to produce the beautiful 'silver mirror' effect. The Tollen's test - developed by a German chemist of the same name - was actually used as a diagnostic test for differentiating aldehydes (positive test) from ketones. Just thought that some might like to see this, since the kickstarter videos made it sound quite mysterious and complicated when, in fact, it has been known and used for probably well over 100 years.
We did this at school about 100 years ago , only managed to silver the bottom quarter of a test tube and that was even more pointless than this coke bottle but it was interesting never-the-less, cheers for the link to the vid.
