    How did the police know to intercept the call in the first place?

    Don't you know. They listen to all criminals' calls.

    And given that the government regards us all as potential criminals.... I guess that explains the metadata laws.

    Someone allegedly dobbed them in;
    "Police claim the conspiracy began with a tip-off from a woman who knew the intended victim. They say Nicole Christine Hancock, 39, told Mr King about the gold - and where to find it. Police said in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday that they cottoned on to the plan on Wednesday, when they intercepted a phone call from an Ingleburn man, Shane King, 32."

    Hard to tell from that article.

    It doesn't say that Nichole Hancock is the same person from the previous sentence who gave the tip-off. It is still the police doing the saying so it certainly implies that it is the same person, but if I was giving tip-offs to the police about criminal activities I don't think I would want them telling everyone.
