Everyone, I've tried reading advice from all over the place about handling and care of silver coins. Not a numi. Stacking for ounce-count. I can't seem to get a consensus on whether its okay to touch silver coins with bare hands. I stack mainly generic silver coins (Maples/Eagles/Phils) which come with mint tubes. Maples - on top of their infamous milkspot problems - seem particularly sensitive to handling. Any thoughts?
Hold coins, like you would a CD, by the edges. if you have a strong urge to touch the face of a coin, than pick one and touch it all you want and write off $2 of its value
Cotton gloves can be bought at most pharmacies very cheaply. Just buy a couple of pairs and leave them with your stacks. Most of my coins not in capsules are in glad wrap sealed sandwich bags which are inert and keep air away from the coins, thus cutting down contact with polutants such as sulphur which causes tarnish. Picture the situation, you have two of the same coin offered to you, one is shiney, the other is tarnished and slightly worn or scratched, which one would you prefer to buy? Which one do you think you woud be able to sell easier? I have a ton of tarnished 50% predecimal coins that are in foul condition, I am going to off load them when everyone starts to panic buy silver and they are not so discerning. The shiney stuff I am keeping for when people start thinking about their purchases again.
Been doing this since day one, but thanks for confirming. Thanks for the advice about the cotton gloves as well, will be purchasing some soon. Any word for where I can pick up silica gel satchets to absorb air moisture?
