Earlier today Aussilver posted this link: http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2011L ement/Text And in it I noticed this: Am I reading this right? Bloody big coin....
Volume of Gold The density of gold is 19.32 grams per cubic centimetre (gm/cc), so a cubic metre would weigh 19.2 tonnes. One tonne would have a volume of 51,760 cubic centimetres, or a cube 37.27 cms square (approximately 15 inches).
The design is the same as the 1989 kangaroo. All lager PM gold coins using that. But what will be the face value?
impossible to carry or transport. you'd need a crane to move it and an industrial vehicle to travel with it. Can't possibly be correct.
Blockhead what about the banks that store tonnes and tonnes of gold this would be a convenient well recognized item which can be moved around on a one tonne (capacity) electric trolley
@ HIho, that's a fair point. i'd be keen to see it. Don't imagine it'll be listed in the Downies catalogue anytime soon.
I found out more info - it is one of a pair that are being made for Chuck Norris, he is going to start playing Two-Up.
It is noted in the Treasurer's determination notes as an "Exhibition coin" so I take that to mean, yes it really is 1 tonne and it is for shows and so forth, not for the likes of us
Link in op is broken - try this one ... http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2011L00874/69157deb-7451-4759-a079-e8ff2b2c2773 2nd last item on page 3
A bit rich for me... Think I'll just settle for the: Wonder how many of the 10kg gold dragons will be minted....
Don't know if it's been posted elsewhere or how long it's been up.. but here it is on the Perth Mint site: http://www.perthmint.com.au/1-tonne-gold-coin.aspx Denomination: $1,000,000
Still think my idea of Dr Evil on the obverse is better
