In the Very first Pilot, "the Cage" "We have eliminated, war hunger". With dilithium crystals, power is basically unlimited & pollution free. Energy for transportation is irrelevant with "transporters". Highways could be re-purposed. Food is easily replicated, no need to grow, land can be re-purposed. Sonic showers, no need to have water, but to drink.
The Ferengi are portrayed as intergalactic "Covetous Jews" displaying many of their stereotypes, as a counterpoint to Terrians.
"Gold Pressed Latinum" http://sto.gamepedia.com/Gold-Pressed_Latinum PMs still valuable.
With unlimited energy and the ability to alter matter, throwing up a 200 story building seams less logistical then you would think.
