STANENE - the 2 dimensional tin may be the next super conductor used in computers.

Research conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University have turned up good results using a new super conducting metal stanene. The new super conducting metal is touted to operate at 100 percent efficiency.
The new metal is created from a two dimensional layer of tin with fluorine atoms added. The addition of the fluorine atoms allows the tin to operate at higher temperatures, reportedly 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
Stanene was named after the Latin name for tin, combined with the suffix for grapheme which also boasts exceptional conducting capabilities.
In a press release, team leader Shoucheng Zhang, a physics professor at Stanford and the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES), a joint institute with SLAC stated, "Stanene could increase the speed and lower the power needs of future generations of computer chips, if our prediction is confirmed by experiments that are underway in several laboratories around the world."
The primary use for stanene is currently focused in topological insulators. Professor Zhang explains, "The magic of topological insulators is that by their very nature, they force electrons to move in defined lanes without any speed limit, like the German autobahn. As long as they're on the freeway the edges or surfaces the electrons will travel without resistance."
Some of the other materials tested for this same application were mercury telluride and several combinations of bismuth, antimony, selenium and tellurium, however none matched up to the prowess of stanene.
Word to the wise, the next time you take a trip to the pantry, consider how much that tin can quietly holding those saturated peas may benefit you in the near future.
