Just got back some coins from NGC so took a few photos: Thought I would share some of the beautiful South African Coins made by the SA Mint. 2011 WWF 50th Anniversary Close up: 2012 South Pole Discovery Close up:
I like the south Pole coin, shame about the R2 in the middle but it looks nice (I also collect maps so that is a bit of a weak spot!)
If that is directed towards me, I have never dealt with the South African mint, but that coin is making me want to contact them asap lol. I've only dealt with the following: -CIT -Helvetica -Royal Canadian mint -Perth Mint -New Zealand Mint -Mexican Mint (through another party) I do know another local dealer who I'm close with who has been dealing with the South African Mint, so I will give him a shout to see if he can source these.
NVM, I won't be able to get this coin regardless, because its less than .999 purity, I will be charged duties and taxes, which will render the deal worthless. Silver R2 Crown Mintmark Mass: 33.626 gram Dia: 38.8mm Metal: Ag 925 Cu 75.
Thanks for the comments As wsd_collector points out these are sterling silver: Metal: Ag 925 Cu 75 and not 999 purity sadly. SA Mint only seem to make sterling silver coins. I can buy directly from the mint and I have one or two of these coins still available but sadly shipping to foreign countries is a little risky therefore I dont do it any longer. There is no courier company (FedEx, Aramex, DHL etc) that is willing to transport coins out of SA to go internationally, they say the risk is just too big for theft. So there is the post office with a tracking number, but tracking will only be until South African border and then the package could get lost and again the post office is not willing to insure coins! When I send coins to NGC for example, I just use registered mail, no insurance and dont mention anything about coins. Seems to be ok - but it is a risk that I have to take. Just for interest: The mintage for the WWF coin is: 5000 The mintage for Antarctica coin is: 2000
@pushingtin I like them and I don't mind if they are .925, will try to get them directly from the mint, thanks
I have never had an issue with the post office as yet (hope it stays that way), but I have heard stories of items gone missing from others. We do however have some great overnight courier companies for courier within South Africa.
well I'm asking because if the parcel send from SA is missing in SA then it is a big problem for SA if it is missing in a foreign country then not P.S. I'm 99.9999999% sure about the work Japan Post does ... time, safety, hand to hand delivery, signature (even for cheapest international services).
I assume the problem lies at customs / border control. Its the only place where articles get scanned, so its easy to tell if its a coin. This is just a guess though.
