A 1/10oz Kangaroo. I thought it'd been sent a 1/20oz coin by mistake. So this is what money is really worth?!
I feel your pain man .. I bought my young boy a 1/20oz crocodile to start his collection. They always look bigger in the photos
Oh I love the coin...it was just a hard lesson in the true value of fiat Minted pure gold is absolutely stunning.
Other gold pieces that wont break the bank but have a good diameter are: 5 gram bars, austrian ducats, french rooster. all are .1867 or less and have a larger diameter / surface area only a little thinner. the ducats are 98.6%au and the roosters are abput 92.5% all those three items will have lower premium than current government backed gold coins under 1/4 oz.
Sshhh, don't tell him about the french coins, i love them and want them for myself.... Have a look into the 20 Franc coins - whether it be from France, Switzerland or whereever. There was a link to a document re investing in pre-33 gold coins that was interesting. My link has been broken but i hope i have it on my other computer somewhere. The only issue with these coins are that they are not 999 and some would say more difficult to sell. But i still love them.
I remember my first gold at $835, back in early 2008. Got a bit more bang for the $$ then. Second round it was $1000 retail per 1oz coin.
Yea I just got my first gram of gold, one of those valcambi bars, and OMG is it small , I was expecting something a lil bit bigger I was also very surprised and depressed at how much our fiat is really worth
Nothing wrong with 1/10oz gold coins. If you're just starting out, i'd totally recommend getting some cheap, but nice looking silver 1oz (or larger) coins to get the 'desire for substantiality' out of your system. 1oz silver coins are great to play with (assuming you don't care if they tarnish or scratch) and they make you feel richer due to their size.
6 grams of gold here. These are small but way more exciting than a couple of 1/10z coins or half a dozen little valcambi's IMO. You can play with them too without affecting value.
I know I've posted the below on another thread, but both threads resonated with me as I was in same position when I bought my first piece of gold: When I bought my first piece of gold (a sovereign) the jeweller handed it to me and I asked "oh, is this a half sovereign". It was so little! Also, when I bought an older sov for the first time (by mail order from a reputable dealer) I got all worried it might be a fake - just because the age and minting quality of some of the old coins isn't the same as the modern ones I had. In my worry, I created a thread on a forum asking opinion.
^^ The first time i saw a gold sovereign on YouTube in some guys hand I was thinking wow, how small is that. 5 cent piece small
