Does anyone have an idea of how big the collector base is for the panda lunar series? How are such estimates made?

It depends on the definition of collector. There are huge numbers of people in China who give and receive silver and gold Lunar coins for Chinese New Year. Many have a year-set collection, but they are not collectors of past years, nor of any other kind of coin. I hesitate to call them coin collectors, although they reliably collect Lunar coins. The number of people who collect Chinese Lunar coins from a numismatic standpoint is a smaller group, but they are there. Lunars are a big business for the latest coins (until the holiday) and a smaller one for past years.
