    Please forgive me if you feel stupider after reading this post but has anybody ever heard of silver plating a gold coin, particularly what it would cost to do? Could be useful if you are being dodgy and are travelling abroad, of which I'm doing neither.

    Ha ha, deception will get people into big trouble esp crossing boarders.

    I had someone else ask me a similar question some time back.

    As it turns out I found his car was fitted with a hidden gps tracker, his phone was tapped, his locked garage, and house were all comprimised, laptop spyware, mobile phone left trail.....etc etc

    He asked me to remove it! And I said have you got anything to hide and he said No.

    My advice was to leave everything in place and carry on as normal.

    He often gets baited but he is ok with that now he is enlightened.

    If it is Legit / not stolen and you just want privacy

    Walk to a bus stop, leave mobile phone at home, go out of town then visit a small frieght forwarder......not the post office they are nosey buggers

    If you have someone you can trust with your life send it to them 36 months before asking about avoidence / deception on a public forum.

    There are better ways to avoid a paper trail but I only consult in person on such matters depending on the requirements (-;

    Was a post ages back for a guy that wanted to silver plate some medieval armor. In theory you could buy some silver solution and an electrode and do it your self.

    Found it:

    For about $15 you can buy quickshine pure silver plating spray from UK -check ebay. It says for use on bronze, copper,brass and to restore worn silverware. Very easy to use.

    Only use and spray paint the coins that have Au on them. If they fall for the spray paint I think its reasonable to assume that they won't know Au means anyway. If questioned tell them its memorabilia from Auschwitz. Then hopefully don't get sent to gaol if they catch you out.

    The spray isn't paint - quoting from box it creates a molecular bond identical to electroplating - with any plating method it will be difficult to remove. Back to the OP, as per another thread, the face value of coins means you can take $10000 face value without declaring so you don't need to disguise them.

    Get a car battery charger, 9v 3v any voltage in dc and stick your gold on negative your silver on Positive and hook them up close but not touching, Submerged in an acid. electrodeposition. You will see a few bubbles evolve as the transfer gets under way.

    the only down side is you will lose some silver in the transfer and the gasses that evolve may be deadly depending on the electrolyte used.
