    hi,

I'd like to make a ring / necklace for my girlfriend.

anyone know an economical option for turning my silver into silver jewellery?
or is it just not worth it?

Worth it if you can come up with a unique design that would say something significant about her. The artisan would likely have their own silver to work with, but you can always ask. If you can't use your own silver, you could sell it and use the fiat to pay the artisan. Ask Rhythm Doctor. I remember him saying something about preferring to have his own jewellery designed. :)

Im pretty sure it wouldnt be worth it .You need rod to make it the costs of turning a small amount into rod would outweigh the costs to purchase it i think. I assume you want to make it out of .999 not .925 you would need to make a few calls to see if you can buy .999 rod. If not converting yours would be the only option. Wheres matrix ? he should know.

Google 'make ring from silver coin' and be prepared to spend some time.

Disclaimer - I have never done this, though I have thought about it.

    DO IT!!!

I have done a couple and they are easy, they just take a bit of time and the constant tapping annoys everyone around you.

I use 1966 50 cent coins and some world coins, avoid the 50% and don't use the cupro nickel ones and you should be fine.

There are actually two ways (Maybe more) to make rings from coins, I have only tried one but the second method looks good too

    http://www.instructables.com/id/Mens-5-Cent-Ring/
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-silver-ring-for-25-cents/

    and the second type

    http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-a-Quarter-into-a-Ring/

My wife was not that taken with the ring I made but I didn't really make it for her benefit anyway!

Furnace? Crucible? Nice instructions on how to make a blast furnace with a vacuum cleaner and a gas bottle can be found online, some run on waste oil as well, just depends on how handy you are.

Kenny, I have a jeweller friend that can make you anything.
He has won many design awards in jewellery.

I asked him to make me a 24k ring the other day out on an ounce of gold.
I'm yet to make it, but he also mentioned he could melt down a gold coin for me if I wanted to provide him with the gold.

I know some kiwi guys that made a kerosene & vacuum cleaner torch to heat the rocks for their hungi .you know when the bury the food underground with the hot rocks. Instead of building a huge fire under the rocks for hours they fire the vac torch up & heat the rocks in about half hour !!! [they used bricks] job done .... I love a bit of ingenuity. Hungi in the 21st century
