Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and am keen to learn as much as I can about collecting/stacking Aussie silver coins. I'm interested in the secondary market value for Aussie silver coins. From my research so far I have estimated that 1966 round 50s sell for around spot plus 15%. The other silver coins I'm not so sure about but have put a list below with a few guesses. How far from the mark am I? I'd also like to hear about why there is such a big difference between what the silver content is and what people are prepared to pay. 1966 Round 50s = spot plus 15% Pre-decimal 50% silver = spot Pre-decimal 92.5% silver = spot plus 2.5% State series $10 = spot plus 15% Kooks = spot plus 100% Dreamcatcher
Hi Boston. No I'm not sure. I'd like to know what more experienced stackers calculate for each type of Aussie coin.
Hi, you got it about right for the round 50s and pre decimal, re the kooks it really depends on the years, the cheapest being the most recent years and the most expensive the 2008, in between there are some years more desirable than others like 2009, 2004, 1990, etc..
Very true. Dreamcatcher, I would strongly recommend keeping your purchases to a minimum number of types of coins. If you choose Kooks, start buying from the current year and avoid the temptation in purchasing prior years. The same for Koalas and Lunars. If you are in for the long term, you will find that you can do some swaps after a couple of years without paying an increased premium. I'd also stick to 1oz rolls rather than 5 and 10 ounce coins. Finally, fifties are the most recognisable silver coin in Australia at 80% content with ASW at 1/3 ounce. These will prove to be the cheapest fractional coin you can buy. Finally, there is word on the street that the Perth Mint may release a silver bullion Kangaroo. That could be a good start for a new stack.
Not a plug for Goldstackers, however there are some 1oz coins listed that may give you a better idea of price premiums. http://www.goldstackers.com.au/store/silver/silver-coins/perth-mint-2014.html
