    Hi Guys,
I've been reading about gold and silver a little bit.
is silver a safe place to put my savings? Only a couple of grand worth, but I don't want it in banks as a digital number.

Not looking to make a profit, just want somewhere safe to keep my cash.

would the best bet be to buy the cheapest 999 bullion?

    Cheers.

If you are after bang for buck yes bullion bars would be the go (lower premiums) - personally if you are after a wealth store I recomend gold instead of silver.

Looks like gold is better suited to you, much lower risk, been a store of wealth for centuries.
Silver is like the younger, hotter daughter of gold. Higher risk but volatile as all hell.

    Stick with experience, go gold.

Howdy. I'm relatively new to the stacking game too but i didn't have a few grand to start with. So I just got a little of everything, I like the actual coins themselves, rather than just the Silver content so I bought a few coins and bars, But with with your budget i'd have probably gone for 10oz bars or something like that.

I've found here is one of the cheapest places, that and the odd steal on Ebay. Saying that I got some well priced 1966's on Gumtree the other day! :)

Id buy bullion only. Less premiums, don't pay for fancy packaging, and rarity.

How about... 1oz gold poured bar, 10oz silver bar. That's $1,850 worth and a sexy start to your stack.

    See pic.

    Thanks guys,
a mix between gold and silver probably isn't a bad idea.

Silver prices might be volatile, but realistically the metal isn't likely to be worth nothing at all.... so I shouldn't be in any more danger than if I had cash in the bank!!
    Likelyhood of a crash?

If buying '2nd hand' ie off these forums, what should one do to ensure they're getting the real deal?

To start with from the perth mint

    20g Minted Gold bar
    $961.52 ($1,362.93/oz)

    1kg Silver Bar
    $1,230.98 ($34.897/oz)

That's $2,192.50. Not sure what postage cost is from PM.
Concern is that their buy price is significantly lower than sell, so I'd have to wait for prices to increase bit to sell and break even.

Good start? PM seems to be cheapest place to buy bullion.

Edit: I'd have bought from www.auroraetluna.com but price for pure bars seems to be cheaper from PM? So confusing! :(

Don't forget to factor in shipping when you work out your pricing.

When buying from the Perth Mint, insurance and postage is charged on top.

When it comes to the yellow stuff, there is sfa advantage of getting ugly poured little square bars.. only costs a miniscule amount more to get a nice minted perth mint bar in a certicard. Plus people like 'em more..easier to sell..the whole liquidity thing all over again. It's kinda like paying a good accountant more to get you more of your tax back rather than going to a supermarket-style accountant who justs gets you in and out just getting the job done.

    Horses for courses.

Advice - buy from someone on here if you're just after a relatively small amount. Someone is always selling something.. if you find someone in your area and show them actual cash monopoly money, you're not going to have to pay big premiums or postage and insurance costs. Likewise, when you need to sell, there will be people here ready to buy from you. We all keep a little monopoly money on hand to help each other out. Captain Kookaburra is great to assist on making you pms liquid. He's helped me out both with trading metal for metal and also paying some monopoly money for metal.

Try to set yourself a bit of a standard when dealing so you can encourage people who buy and sell with you to do the same. I sold some silver at 4% above spot (very cheap), but likewise I mentioned this in another post and some people are willing to sell to you at the same % above spot. It's like a "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine". Most of us that put through big orders of specific items we want in our stacks have to go through dealers, which invariably have premiums attached (fair enough, though! It's their business.) The dealers on here are very good though and offer AT LEAST spot price on buy backs and a bit more for Kooks etc. They are very reputable.

My next big order will be with my dealer, unless I see someone who wants to ditch some 10 and 20 oz PM silver bars.. but I can't see it happening. They are a prize, those bars. a REAL PRIZE. I got hooked on them and haven't looked back.

    Says you...

I'd take a poured bar over a carded bar any day. The carded bars look tacky (especially pamp), harder to store, can't even touch the stuff. No, carded bars are not more liquid - any evidence to back this up?

Just because it's your opinion it doesn't make it fact.

Believe it or not I'd much prefer an industrial 1kg abc bar than a shiny 1 kg pamp bar. So no, you're not always right.

I totally disagree, i would take a carded pamp bar over a poured bar any day.

I would also take a nice PAMP 1kg over an ABC bar and funnily enough its not just me that feels this way as 2 of this sites major sponsors will pay more on buyback for either PAMP or PM 1kg bars. Now why is that.....?

Just because it's your opinion it doesn't make it fact. :)

    Bingo, it's an opinion.

Premiums are a fixed cost not variable, if price rises you are going to end up with better gains if you bought larger quantity at a price closest to spot.

Can't ignore the storage advantages of poured.

Can't ignore the 'bang for buck' advantage of poured.

Can't ignore the fugly design of fortuna pamp. ( ok that one is opinion)

True, but we are talking about 1 oz here, not 50 oz, so the gains are not going to be any different.

I think if your just hold a few oz, carded bars / coins are they way to go.

If your holding gold in bulk i would be looking at the majority poured bars with a small percentage of carded bars / coins.

Personally i see no huge storage advantage for the poured bars, my storage facility has more than enough room for carded bars, they are only credit card sized remember!

Alright, looks like I'm in the market to buy some gold and silver on here :)

Have to find a seller with plenty of rep points in Melbourne.
~1oz Gold perthmint or PAMP bar, would prefer minted
    ~1kg Silver bar
'66 50's are about $13-14 according to wdavis. Are they more liquid than a new silver coin with no fiat value? If so,
    ~20 '66 50's

I predict that should put me somewhere just under $3k.

    Here's my WTB thread

Ready to do this thing, woo hoo!

I'd take a carded bar over a cast anyday. The finish is heaps better plus it is not going to get grubby from all the touching thats going to go on. I'm assuming here that people on this forum love their PM's so much that we occasionally like to cop a feel. :p

I'd say gold is way hotter, silver is just more likely to put out :)
