Hi folks, I have just seen a S2 1kg lunar rabbit on a bullion dealers website for nearly 1000 GBP!!! Why are these coins so expensive, as I thought the Aus mint would pump out as many kilos as was ordered? :/

    Supply & demand
Just because they can mint more it doesn't mean that they will
How many were actually made is the question .Lunar kg coins always sell for more than a kg bar
Unlike Kooks/Koala's which only get $50 premium over a bar

thanks for the reply, does the Perth mint run these coins for one year only? And do you think one of these kilo rabbits is worth purchasing at this price?

    Yes
If you don't know your Lunars ,don't touch it
Unless you can get it for 1kg bar price

You can pick one up in aus for $1200 dollars, (which to mee seems a little expensive).

so avaliable over here for about 800 pounds.

Would be cheeper to ask a stacker to buy one hear for you and get it sent over.

I would of asked someone, but with shipping over to Scotland and the fact that we get ripped off by the gov by wait for it'''' 20% vat on silver purchases it would make it out the question. I got caught out when I first started collecting/stacking with graded SAE's, it put the price up quite a bit on each coin once the UK customs and the post office got there fees. The post office over here handles collecting the fees for the customs so they charge you a wack also!! Rip off UK indeed!! There is no vat on investment gold which is the upside, they still tried to tax me on a gold buffalo proof that I imported in from the states though, total jokers!! I had to phone the customs and tell them their own laws!! LOL

Pretty sure the 1kg lunar silver coins are 'open to continued minting' up until the end of the series II in 2019 or whenever.

So I wouldn't touch that 1kg rabbit with a 10-foot pole but instead buy a 1kg dragon which relates to current spot.

Maybe buy 12 x 1kg dragons and swap them later on for the others :p

Last year, I'm sure they said the same thing to people trying to buy 1992 Kooks.

1kg silver Lunars for ANY YEAR can be minted up until the end of Series 2. Just up to the Perth Mint if/when they will.

They wont start the presses for just 1 - but if you put in a decent order (20+) then I'd say you might be able to convince them during a quiet time. But with them starting to spool up for the Snake release I'd say it would be now or wait until next year sometime.

Series II kilogram bullion coins can continue to be minted up until the end of the series - i.e. 2019.

cannot imagine rabbit being reminted... tigers yes, dragons yes, but demand for rabbit would be to small to deviate from current year 1kgs

I'd think the most likely candidate to be reminted would be the 2008 Mouse as its probably got the lowest mintage to date and hence highest secondary market premium (although the PM claim they dont look at that!).

It's not the mint that decides on what to remint - it's in response to a wholesale order from a distributor.

    Same logic would apply though.
