We are currently doing research on the returns investors or collectors of banknotes have made and we would be very interested in hearing stories from people whom have made a profit from holding banknotes. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. www.bulldogbanknotes.com
I've managed to make some small gains on old paper consecutive notes. I can't remember exactly how much I gained but it was around 20% in 5 years. To be honest I wish I'd kept them.
Due to the debacle of having Australia's most prominent high-end banknote dealer in John Pettit going bankrupt last decade and the debacle with the Rare Coin Company based in Western Australia at about the same time, I don't think there would be too many people in Australia who can claim to have made a tidy profit by holding banknotes over the past 10 years. As a matter of fact, I come across many listings of high end rare Australian banknotes that are selling at auction now for 80% or 90% less than what the purchases paid for them 10 years ago! The only people who make money out of holding banknotes, in the long run, are the greedy bankers.
This Australian Banknote previously sold for $320,000. It was recently put up for auction with an estimate of $12,000 - $14,000! Need I say more? Oh, and it did sell for the upper estimate of $14,000 plus buyers commission.
