A search didn't turn up much on this here (my search Fu fail?). What do these do to the value on a OMP coin? Can they be safely removed? Thanks! Edit: I see that Badon has a post at China Mint pointing out possible NCS conservation. http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php?topic=3597.0 Edit 2: and Google's search pulled up a discussion by Yenus that the forum search missed. /Oops http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-12709-news-possible-cure-for-red-spots-on-gold-pandas.html
copper spots usually................... and yes easier to remove than milk spots, ,my understanding is they use heat to remove them ,as the melting points are different in the 2 metals ,i saw quite a few before and after pics and they are remarkable............ NGC grading has conservation site also ,i believe they have some pictures up too........
Yeh I've got copper spots on a few gold pandas, namely from 2010, 1990 and 1988. Doesn't bother me that much but I know I lose a premium when I try to sell, might have to NCS them and fix it up before selling.
Thats great to hear jc, I have a '92 1/2 oz with a couple of copper spots so great to hear all is not lost Thanks for the info!
Here is a picture of a Gold Liberty suffering Red/Brown spots. Ron G gives a pretty good summery of what is happening with this Gold coin syndrome, on his web site 1st paragraph in bold here: https://sites.google.com/site/libertydollarencyclopedia/gold-copper-plati Edit: Nitric acid wash is a way of getting rid of any contaminates, as it will eat all other metals except the .999 gold, exception of platinum".....If the coin goes Brown it ain't .999.....If it dissolves to nothing its a fake LOL.
Good information so far, thank you all! I wonder if these red spots come back after conservation.. are all surface contaminants completely removed or do they seal the surface some how? The lack of information on NCS's conservation techniques is a little disconcerting. I understand they need to protect proprietary information but it would be good to know in general what was done or what to expect.
I have seen these small rust looking spots on some of my silver pandas as well , are they the same thing? to me it looks like maybe small chunks of rust or iron somehow got on the die when they were struck and embedded in the metal? Does anyone know if they can be cleaned?
I have a NCS'd panda which has one or two of these spots. I have no idea how they came to be but I am sadface They didn't develop after I bought them, they were already there so who knows.
The rust looking spots, not red spots. I don't have any NCS/NGC gold pandas at all only PCGS and OMP.
Yep. It's a black-ish/grey-ish spot/blob on my silver panda. I will try and get a picture later when I have time... or silverstar has one. It looks like a speck of dust but the coin has been NCS'd so it doesn't make sense.
