How to send coins for grading to the US valued over $1000 without paying GST on return. Any advice or experience on this? This is not a purchase and the grading cost is below $1000.
You will receive a letter in the mail saying its been held up at customs, there's an e-mail address on the form. Just write to that address saying the letter contains returned goods and show your outgoing consignment slip. You are only liable to pay taxes on the grading fee if the grading fee exceeds $1000 or if you run a business (in which case you can claim back the taxes anyway).
I assume you are referring to Australia Post, not sure if their wording is we do not ship, or we do not insure ? It is correct though to keep a copy of what was sent and the service you have received, in this case grading and protection etc... That is the only value you need to list. Still not saying it won't get held up just this is what I was told is the process.
The declared value of the coins is what is then declared by the grading company because it is used for the insurance/registered mail label and shipping costs. The invoices returned with your coins are a copy of what you sent with your original submission. So if you send them a submission form with a $1000 declared value in coins, the paperwork returned to you is going to show the same $1000 declared value in coins, they don't alter the price based on grades received. Not sure if that helps at all.
Australia Post Wording is WE DO NOT INSURE. if they say we do not ship then how is everyone sending coins overseas James
