If it wasn't made by a bored apprentice the other explanation I have heard for these is that they fall out of the pockets of clothes in a dryer, the big ones at the laundromat, they go round and round, like walking up the 'down' escalator, heating up and the constant rotating and dings on the points eventually starts to round the coin out. That is what I have heard anyway, I saw a very fat rimmed $1 and that was apparently the reason given, so there you go!
