Hi folks. As per the heading, I opened the cover and noticed some condensation in the plastic pouch that held the coin. So I carefully eased the coin out and the rims felt tacky. The Queen's face had some kind of oily residue and there was milk spotting that looked like it was caused by moisture, next to her face. I slipped a square of tissue into the pouch to try and dry it out and the coin is currently sitting on my desk being sticky or oily, without a cover. Could it be the old PVC deteriorating? How do I get the residue off without scratching the coin? What do I do? THanks, coin gurus.
I have a few like this, they were the 1982 ones as well. Bought them for spot about 18 months ago, so I'm not worried. But my point is, you're not alone
My 1982 Commonwealth Games one is the same. Must be coming from the plastic holder as I have cleaned the coin numerous times. Not worth worrying about the coins are only worth spot price anyway.
Thanks! I wonder if it's because the pouch is so much smaller than the NSW one. I know they're not worth a lot, I just prefer not to touch any coin if I can help it. You've never had this problem spread to other coins, have you?
Acetone got most of the guck off. I put it in a staple 2x2. I wonder if it's worth wrenching the other $10 coins out of the RAM wallets where they're more permanently sealed? Oh well, this is all small pertaters to you, I'm sure.
old PVC deteriorating causes it the oil in the plastic leaching out sure is a strange feeling slimy coins. mint sets in those PVC folders have the same problem.
