This Pope is making bold moves as he has taken some positions that are atypical of most Popes. I don't recall any Pope ever openly admitting to the science of anthropogenic climate change....this is a very positive direction the current Pope is taking in my view. .
Maybe Cardinal Pell should stick to things he is an expert in, such as crushing victims of Church sexual abuse. (Edit: then again, maybe not.)
Do people really still think that the world will 'fix itself before it's too late'? I'm not depressed or gloomy about it but if you go to South East Asia and see millions of people wallowing in their own piss and shit it's pretty clear where the world is heading. Enjoy it we might be the last lucky ones to enjoy what's left and morn the losses that occur in front of our eyes. We're probably going to destroy most life on earth before going under, but give it a few million years and earth will be just as vibrant as it is today. We all split from the same concestor so whilst humans may not inherit the earth something equally deserving will.
It's all just blather to me on both sides of the debate. No human is smart enough to have the answers to the universe. Believe want you want. At the end of the day it's you who have to live with your decision. Not directed at anyone in particular, just my 2c.
You'd probably only be able to form an opinion based upon first hand knowledge about where the world is heading if you could compare the world based upon first hand knowledge say 50 or 100 or 300 years. Anything else is just an assumption. So I'd suggest that what you witnessed was not evidence, rather, it was something that at the time made you sad. From what I've read, England had a pretty good go at wallowing in its own piss and shit a couple of hundred years ago yet it's managed to extricate itself. And now it wallows in our cricketing shit. :/
If scientists proved that to save earth we would have to make having children illegal for 90% of the population for some decades and cease manufacturing of non-essential consumer goods what would people think? They would argue till it's too late. That's all that is going on now. And the solution is so against human nature and political sensibility that we will only perpetuate the dominant ideology. Hey it's just my view I'm sure I'm in the minority but I'm at peace with it. Die before you die!

Like I said. If you arrive at a position based purely upon what you experience at some point in time, then it's likely that it is only applicable at that point in time and only relevant to you, i.e. you were clouded by emotion. By our nature humans seek answers to problems. We will overcome any environmental problems that we face simply because we don't want to make having children illegal for example. Necessity is the mother of invention after all. The Malthusian prophecy has been proven wrong. So we have two alternatives, Despair and Legislate, or Rejoice and Capitalise. Both roads are fraught with danger, but only the second has rewards.
