A confusing situation at times . How does one assess the difference between an original issued Perth Mint Kookaburra 1oz silver bullion coin from the re-strikes that the Mint has produced in recent years . Appreciate any advice and comment from knowledgable members . Thanks .
You can't, exact same coin design. Only difference is that the original (for 1990-1999) comes in a square capsule.
Correct me if I am wrong someone, but with the reissue of the 2009 set, they have the P20 designation somewhere on the coin. This is what the set looks like: http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...rra-20th-edition-silver-bullion-coin-set.aspx
The coins from that set (10k mintage) and the 2009 coin will have the P20 but not the reissued bullions coins.
I'm a bit new to this and this may be a silly question! I have just bought on the internet a 1991 kookaburra 1oz. The picture on the internet showed it in a square capsule as discussed here so I thought I was buying an original not one of the restrikes discussed. It has arrived in a round capsule and I can't see anything on it which might indicate which it is. I know at the end of the day it is a bullion coin worth 1oz of silver, but do I need to be concerned that it might not be exactly what I thought I was buying? Also the advertising didn't say if it was a restrike or otherwise, just the picture showing it in a square capsule. In short what would some of you more experienced stickers do, if anything?
Depends if you paid the premium for an original. I'd ask the seller where they got it from and why it's different to the picture. Was there any toning and was it from ebay!?
Thanks! It looks just like a new one, faultless as far as I can tell. It was from one of the site sponsors and I don't want to say anything that might seem critical if the whole thing is simply my inexperience. I intend to ring and ask but not from a position of complete ignorance.
Probably not a deliberate attempt to do anything fraudulent, most likely used a Google Image of a 1991 Kook rather than taking a photo themselves. The coins are the same but some people might prefer the square capsule. I am not sure of any difference in premium between the originals and the remints .
Unless there is a significant difference in the value now or in the future my inclination is to do nothing. My prime interest is stacking and getting a collection of a set is only a 'nice to have'. Part of me is also wondering if any difference might be offset by having a brand new coin rather than a 24 year old one with any risk of deterioration. I think it's been said elsewhere on here that paying a couple of dollars here and there on 'collecting' silver is not the end of the world. Certainly I wouldn't consider it at all with gold.
