"identical artistry each year" - looks like the above design will be standard rather than a new design each year.
Wonder if this is the coin the mint ran the "pick a new animal" poll a few months back for - although at the time it was supposed to be another silver issue. What were the mintages of the old Koalas like? Often see the fractionals like 1/2oz around.
I voted for the platypus! Wonder what the premiums on these are gonna be, and why they decided to not have a changing design each year.
As much as I like the idea ESP. The PLATypus which is so appropriate... that design is just ugly. Looks more like roadkill than a platypus. I'd probably swap one of my other platinum coins for it but wouldn't buy it with fresh funds.
They sure are! I've always loved the platypus, and apart from the nasty spurs that can really cause horrendous pain they are a beautiful animal. But they cannot ever be messed with, or you'll be in a world of pain. Sub $1000 platinum crash? Sure, just wait for China's massive debt bubble to go BANG! and we might well see <$1000/oz platinum. Hell, I think we'll probably see <$1000/oz RHODIUM, never mind platinum.
I thought this might have been an early April Fool's joke after hearing directly from Bron that they wouldn't be doing platinum coins again because there was no interest for them! If platinum dips below $1700 these would be very appealing...
They're available on bb. Premium seems pretty reasonable. http://www.bullionbourse.com/#ecwid:category=584924&mode=product&product=3045836
Those Mint marketing guys keep product releases under tight wraps. Anyway the limitation to 30,000 doesn't really make this a true bullion coin minted to demand. Will be interesting to see how it goes.
