now i know why nobody has privetely minted coins in australia

this is an email i recieved from the perth mint
    thank you for your enquiry
Please take the following factors into consideration:

    1. Metal Type: pure silver

    2. Minimum Order Quantities: 2500 pieces.

    3. Tooling: The cost for tooling is dependent on the design and whether or not a plaster will be required. You mention 2D so a plaster is not required for this job.

    4. Strike cost per medallion: Please note that you will be charged a strike cost per medallion plus metal. The strike cost will depend on the size and quality of the medallion i.e. if it has a Proof or Bullion finish.

    5. Pad-printing: Do you require colour on the medallions and if you do, is it needed on one or both sides?

    6. Packaging: Would you like the medallions in capsules only or do you require them to be presented in display cases?

Please note that the delivery date for all custom minted medallions are approximately 3 months, that is from the time the final artwork is being signed. You may also wish to visit our website www.perthmint.com.au in order to learn more about our company and products.

Please find below some prices for your reference:

The cost for minting 2500 1oz Silver Proof medallions are as follows:

    Artwork & Tooling: approximately $2,500

Strike cost for 2500 1oz Silver medallions (proof finish with colour one sided only) @ $25 per medallion: $62,500

    Packaging:

    2500 generic leatherette cases @ $6.00 per case: $15,000

Please note that the metal cost for 2500 1oz Silver (based on metal price of A$36) is $90,000

The total cost is approximately: $170,000

Please note that the metal cost is determined by the prevailing spot price of the day.

Please note that all prices quoted are exclusive of Freight and GST.

Please note that all packaging materials done outside The Perth Mint and promotional materials must be approved by The Perth Mint prior to production.

    What are these medallions for?

Please let me know if you have any queries.

    Kind regards,

    Tze Ling

i have no idea i was just curous as to why there was no other bullion in australia apart from the PM stuff so i sent an email for 2D which is the cheapest for tooling costs .just the MOQ is enough to put most people off the idea not to mention $25 per piece for striking. I would imagine the costs would be around $15 -20 dollars for a bullion coin which would make it to expensive to compete with anything on the market plus the capsules another cost on top you would have to sell them sell them for over $60 to break even or make a tiny profit on your 150K outlay

Only 150k, that's not much of an outlay really for machinery. It all depends on your time frame for breaking even. With enough capital behind you it would be possible to run at a loss for a while, and don't forget that machinery like that can be written off under tax... it wouldn't happen overnight but im sure if you invested enough time and effort rounds of comparable price to the Perth Mint could be made... It could be that there isn't enough of a market in Australia though, or else I daresay it would have been done already.

Obviousely that is just the cost for a customer wanting custom rounds/medallions. I wonder how much it would cost just to buy blank rounds, then press with your own equipment? That may then be far more afforable.

PM's cost per kook for example must be a dollar or two to make profit.
