http://www.perthmintbullion.com/Blog/Blog/10-12-23/Certificate_Scam_Alert.aspx I suppose it is a form of flattery that we should be targeted for a scam
I heard the other day that the Nigerian financial scams add up to billions each year. Isn't the grifter's motto 'you can't cheat an honest man'?
Best to leave a question on our corporate blog, I'm not across the detail of the coin business in this area. Certainly we don't like it but if the ultimate source is overseas then it is hard to shut down.
Perhaps You could do a Perth Mint blog post on the "HGE" and "100 mills" coins that are showing up as well. Many of them are based on Perth Mint designs. How those things are allowed to be listed in eBay's bullion category is beyond me as they're not bullion by any definition of the word.
When ebay came along I suggested the Mint should start its own coin focused ebay, where sellers deliver coins to us, we check/verify them, and then shipp them out when the buyer sent us the money (which we pass back to the seller) - ie a proper escrow service. No interest at the time (or now) so now we have all these scammers.
Great idea and you deserve a promotion. Perth Mint is public service isn't it? (we don't do it that way, it won't work, we tried it, I'll have to pass that one up the line, the timing is wrong, I don't think the Minister would approve).
