Hey guys, I picked up some very old gold pandas from ebay recently. Thought I'd share some pictures with you. I haven't had these coins verified as genuine so I'm interested in your opinions. 1983 1/10th This is my favourite of the bunch.
1984 1/20th This coin was described as toned on the ebay listing but I bid on it anyway because it was very cheap and the effects didn't look that significant. However, in real life, the toning is quite apparent. Not sure how well it shows up in the photo.
1987 1/20th This coin appears to be in very good condition but I think the sleeve may be a fake? What do you guys reckon?
1991 1/10th This coin is also in great condition. It came with the slip as you can see and the sleeve appears to be original so I doubt this one is a fake.
Just for the sake of comparison I've taken a photo of a 2010 panda. The difference in the level of detail is pretty staggering. But I suppose that's fair enough, the 1983 coin was minted 28 years ago!
Fakes usually stand out for a few reasons: 1. Poor strikes. 99% of fakes are really shocking (e.g. Poor strikes, poor details, extra/missing details, incorrect weight, wrong years, etc) 2. Poor/Absent packaging. Most fakes come with the wrong packaging or no packaging (E.g. A Shanghai Panda coming in a ShenZhen packaging). There are very few quality fakes, and up to now most have exhibited very soft strikes and can be distinguished easily by the lack of detailed definition - no loupe required.
From the photo's they look like they are silver I never understood how this happens with photo's but you see it quite a bit
