It is a frosty -1degree Celsius and my I feel a shiver each time the wind blows... but I keep hoping (and praying) that I will be blessed with the opportunity of getting some fairly exotic Pandas today.

It's been a while since my last hunt, and I was eager to see what was available.

After completing my first 1989-2011 1oz OMP silver Panda set a little while ago, I developed a taste for something a little bit more exotic (and hopefully profitable)... 12oz and 5oz Pandas :)

These are significantly a lot harder to find and a lot more expensive than the usual 1oz silver Pandas. But it is easy to see why many people don't want to let go of their bigger bears once they have them - and why a lot of people are willing to pay top dollars for them.

On the APMEX website, 12oz Pandas are almost completely unavailable.

Tonight my prayers were answered, and I managed to acquire the following big bears... thus completing my first 1990 silver set:

    1990 12oz Silver Panda (PROOF) Mintage: 2,500

    1990 5oz Silver Panda (PROOF) Mintage: 5,000

1990 1oz Silver Panda (PROOF) Mintage: 20,000 (an older pic, but this new Panda looks identical in quality)
    [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/675_1990pf.jpg][IMG][/imgz][imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/675_1990pr.jpg][IMG][/imgz]

With such low mintages on all the Proof Pandas, and a growing Panda fan base, I am fairly confident that these bears should retain and increase in value with the coming years.

I will likely get them graded a bit later down the track since the 12oz and 5oz Pandas are outside their OMP. They are in surprisingly good condition (no whitespots or dings... very little toning). Their mirror finish is stunning.

I'm in no rush to sell, but I am always open to offers :)

12oz Silver Panda (PROOF) RRP: $2590 (outside OMP) (unavailable at APMEX)
5oz Silver Panda (PROOF) RRP: $1100 (outside OMP) (unavailable at APMEX)
1oz Silver Panda (PROOF) RRP: $450 (in OMP) (unavailable at APMEX)

Maybe that tao will now have to be the 2009/2012 tao of big bears with cubs?

Thanks to Yennus' inspiration and this site, I also have some 5 oz pandas, and I really love the big shiny coins! Wish I could go for the 12 oz also, but for now I think that will be a dream.

Hmm why do you say 2009/2011 tao of 5 oz? Don't the more recent 5 oz issues start with 2003?

    Hi yennus,

Does the 1oz Silver Panda (PROOF) (in OMP) come with the box and COA?

2012 Pandas should be out any day now... Not sure on the price of the 2012 5oz Pandas, but my guess is that it will probably be around $700-$800each.

Thanks for your kind comments :) They encourage me greatly :)

I use to think that 5oz and 12oz Pandas were expensive... but then it was "Ouch" that put the idea into my head that they are actually very very affordable compared against the 1oz Proof Coins...

E.g. A 1oz 1990 PROOF Panda goes for about $450... so a 5oz 1990 PROOF should go for about $2200 (or more because they are much rarer).... but they are only selling at $1100, or $220 per ounce... which means that they are effectively half the price (per ounce) than their 1oz counterparts :)

Same thing occurs with the 12oz Pandas... If priced equivalently with the 1oz PROOF Pandas, they should be worth $5400... but instead, they are currently valued at $2590. My "hope" is that these are far undervalued at the moment, especially considering their beauty and rarity.

It also means more bang (silver) for my buck (fiat). :)

Hi Lightsview, the 1oz Silver Panda (PROOF) comes with COA but not the original box. Thanks for your interest.

It is often believed that the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Pandas are very similar in appearance, making an unofficial tao :)

The 1oz 1990 Proof Panda in amazingly wonderfully shiny lustrous mint OMP condition! With original wooden box! One of the best conditions I've seen a OMP 1990 Panda in.
