A thread for the olympic gold coins. Mine happen to be the Sydney 2000 ones. Unfortunately the 2000 capsule was cracked on the back surface at one point obviously. Nice set though.

I also have the Silver Emu, as I like the emu theme and am trying to collect all the emu type coins.

Yeah it's my first one, bought it for bullion reasons only, but geez they are nice little coins.

Be interested to know what the issue price was on these coins. I can't see them listed in the RAM Mint Issues mags leading up to 2000.

Cheers silverAM. It was from feebay, the seller had almost $40 postage on it, which probably turned a few potential buyers away. I confirmed with the seller beforehand that he was happy for me to pick it up :)

Those Gold ones are real nice, I missed a few $100 ones at Auction a few months back that were set in a pendant with a diamond they were very nice. That set is very classy in the wood case.

BTW I have a couple of the Sydney 2000 Silver series if you are interested "Festival of Dreaming" and the "Kangaroo and Grasstree" PM to discuss a swap if you like. If you wanted to add to your theme collection.

I also have 1kg Complete Olympic Sports Theme coin but that is not up for Swap yet ;)

rbaggio I bought the original gold, silver and bronze sets in 1999. The gold was $3470 that's right a rip off considering gold was about $470 an ounce back then. I would be far better of to have just bought 2.5 ounces of gold. Still you live and learn to me now coins seem a waste of time unless you are minting them!

    Hey MikeO,

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the info.

I would say that BULLION coins are still a good way to go, however i agree that NUMISMATIC coins (like these Olympic ones) are a risk if purchasing at time of issue. I am interested in paying BULLION prices only, so if i am lucky to score a NUMISMATIC coin at a BULLION price, then all the better.

I own a lot of bullion gold which I will sell when the price permits silver also. Silver has been a much better investment than gold of late. When I bought I did not realise how much the exchange rate could affect the price. Tonight USD/AUD is 1.012 damn it.

Still have all the coins. I could get around $4500 for the gold set now I think. What the mints (I am talking about the Perth Mint) do though is an absolute rip off. They received over $200 each coin for pressing them. If I consider inflation then I doubt I would make anything.

That's Journey Begins and you wont get that one cheep.

I have the full set now but a half set was my first gold purchase. Paid $500 for the four of them.... but gold was <A$600 then.

And I agree they are pretty coins. There is a v nice 10 g para-olympics coin too. I have a couple of them.

your silver coin set sounds like someone sold at a big loss somewhere down the line. I was an original subscriber to these coins in 1999. I am not sure of the original total but my records show I was paying $44.50 a coin! The case was for "free". So that is over $700 for 16.27 oz of silver. The Perth Mint was asking $8.21 an oz for silver then so they sold $133 of silver for more than $700 using fancy packaging. Since I was one of the suckers I am not pleased but still it is a lesson I accept and will not fall for again. By the way are you guys aware that after the olympics the gold and silver sets were packaged into one large case and sold for $6000! At that time the original gold coin was sold out only as a single coin you could still get it in a set.

    Fantastic Dynoman.
Intelligencer - I love the emu olympic coin. I have my eye on one in my local shop. But he won't drop the price from $54 unfortunately. He knows i want it and he also knows that i only by for a small premium over spot. He does keep things for me that he wants to get rid of though, like the $10 coins i got for spot.

Great purchase for just over spot Dynoman, infact even if the weight of the wooden presentation box is 'counted' as silver and paying spot for the total weight is still a good price.
how heavy is the box? roughly ?
