Hiya folks. Does anyone know roughly how old this awesome 1oz is? It has 020 stamped on the back. It's sort of blocky, not minted. I haven't seen one before, but I'll bet some of us know about them! Age? Rarity? Value? Any replies would help, thanks.
I wasn't supposed to buy anything this week, but I had to get this! Not being able to find any info about them is driving me crazy, so if anyone can help, I'd REALLY appreciate it.
To me, that sounds like 3 votes for "Slink quietly back to the source of this one and quietly pick up the other two", yeah?
What you have there Ag-ness is a AGR Matthey 1 oz bar. Yes, quite rare! Not to many people I know that have them, wish to part ways with um. These were made under license for the Perth Mint by agr mattey in the 80's.... Perth mint now owns this dissolved company from what I can work out........ If you ever wish to flick it.
I went back to the source this morning, and the bar's siblings were still there. Most surprising of all, when I turned the second one over, look what the sh** I found out! The little darlings are consecutively numbered! Well, the first two anyway, but the third is close! Whooopeee!
I've found coin shop people are Numismatists first and foremost, and don't think much of anything that's been circulated. When I came back and asked for the other two, he actually chuckled a bit, as if he didn't think there was much to them. That's the only advantage I've found. On the other hand, they wanted to give me $160-$170 for my 1871 young head half sov (below spot)) but sell their commonest 1oz silver coins for $45.
Thanks for the support, folks. I really appreciate your input. I had to decide quickly and had no info to work on, except from you, so thanks a bunch.
Hehe, not really! When I find out more about them, I'll know how much of a bargain they were, and I might fess up then. Blac: Thanks for the offer! They're not for sale, at this stage. I might keep them for show-and-tell for a while.
I sense a real auction on the cards here. I wouldn't pay what a collector would for them, but I can say for sure they'd get a very nice price here on SS if you put them up.
