I came across a 1/2 oz coloured dragon in a post-office today for $60. It came in a little red box with red lining inside and an outer packaging of plain white cardboard slip box. Ebay has at least one of these for sale claiming it is "proof" but without box or certificate. Is that is accurate or are these are simply non-proof coloured dragons and therefore do not come in the more fancy red box with black lining and coloured outer box? I can not find the details on this item on the Perth mint site or anywhere else but I did notice the trading thread has some of these in 1/2 and 1oz for sale. Does anyone know the if there is limited in mintage on these differently boxed or non-proof coloured coins?
When i was at the post office the other week i looked at a sheet the lady had from the PM and noticed some dragons in the red only box. I wondered about it as the mintage was 48000, can not remember if these were 1/2 oz or not. The sheet seemd to be releases for next month as the square dragon coins and baby dragon coin was on it also.
I picked1 up from the PO today, than went to Downies to question them on it They called them Specimen's
Was it the 1/2 oz or 1oz (if indeed there is a 1 oz in this "specimen" line)? Any thoughts on their future investment value? They are only $10 cheaper than the proofs with possible mintage differences of 10,000 versus 48,000. I think I might pick one up anyway......as it does not seem I will be finding any proofs in the PO around here :|
spannermonkey!!!! u managed to get response from downies??? i ordered 2x 1oz color proof dragon, still no newssss!!! calling downies is not a option (oversea calls is expensive)
I'm in Melbourne city most days & get to chat with the staff if it's not busy Trust me it pays to pay they're prices on some things I ordered a 2oz coin from them today ,the woman said don't bank on getting it. They had a couple of 5oz coins in stock ,but no news on any more coming in ,in any size
Depends which 'Downies' you are talking about - there are distinct branches that seem to be quite independent Spannermonkey is talking about visiting the Downies shop in Melbourne If you ordered something online, it was either from Downies online sales dept or Eurocollections - both are in Melb but at a different location and run by different people Downies also run auctions from the basement underneath the Melb shop - again different people And there is also a shop in Sydney Apparently there is also a 'head office' somewhere (Sydney?) that the Melb staff keep using as an excuse when convenient (ie. "head office set the prices, not us" - I wonder sometimes)
every year australia post have the perth mint produce 3800 1/2 OZ lunar coins in the red box with white outter box with no cert and it seems these all get sold but sense no body knows where they come from the flipping value is very poor australia post do not advertise them anywhere they just show up, shame really no body knows much about them because they are low mintage. cheers
haha! the head office sound like "something" to put the blame on. i ordered online, multiple emails sent and i have got no reply from them... gave up on sending email to them for a response already.
Went to my post office today, they wouldn't sell me the "specimen" 1/2oz coloured dragon. Said released 1st november. Is it worth getting for $60?
I would be interested to know more about these 'specimen' 1/2oz dragon's as well. Have got one put aside at my local PO, she wouldn't sell it to me till the 1st Nov, thought it a bit strange as 1/2 coloured proofs have been out for a while now.
