I was recently looking at the 1 oz Silver Panda competitive sets and trying to understand why certain coins are worth more points than other coins.

Here are three coins that I looked at:

    2011 - Mintage 1,500,000 MS70 = 450+ pts
    2003 - Mintage 600,000 MS69 = 160+ pts
    1995 - Mintage 168,000 MS69 = 230 pts.

I don't have the NGC population reports available, but I'm pretty sure that there are fewer graded MS69/70 1995 coins then there are 2011 MS70, so how come NGC awards Twice the points for an easy to find 2011 coin and less than half the points for harder to locate coins.

The NGC point system on the surface doesn't seem to have anything to do with either Mintage or their own Population reports. Why? What is the NGC Point system based on?

Good question, one I'd like the answer to as well.

The MS70 30th Anniversary Panda gives me over 600 points whereas a hard to obtain 1999 LD Panda only gives me around 350 points, if that.

NGC: "We place a value on each coin that is based on the relative rarity of its type, date and grade. This value takes many factors into account such as grade, population, market value, eye appeal and expert opinion. When a set is ranked in the registry, its rank is judged based on the total of the individual scores of all the coins."

Does anyone believe that the individual scores assigned to Silver Pandas accurately reflects relative rarity, type, date, grade?

    I don't, but then again I'm a NewB.

I sent a request to NGC Registry today asking them to review the 489 points awarded to MS70 coins from 2007 - 2012.

The Population reports of the number of coins graded MS70 since 2007, ranges from 416 in '07 to over 6,800 in '11. These MS70 populations exceed the MS69 populations in almost every year prior to 1999 where the MS69 points are substantially lower.

I feel the points awarded to the MS70 coins since 2007 distorts the competitive rankings of Silver Pandas.

If you agree, that the MS70 points awarded to coins since 2007 should be reviewed, then it would be helpful if you let NGC know how you feel.

    Just received this email:

Thank you for letting us know about the scoring issue. The China Panda coin scores have been adjusted.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Thank you,
    Kathy Timoshenko

It appears that NGC has re-evaluated the 10Y Panda Registry sets with the new point values.
