In between high-level meetings in Beijing last weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel took a walk through the hutong and shops of the Nanluogu Xiang area...Merkel noted that the year 2012 includes celebrations of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Year of China in Germany and numerous exchange events in China. She said all are opportunities "to get to know each other and to jointly develop new projects and explore new avenues". "

For those new to the scene, Germany has been of great support to China throughout the last few decades - and borrowing a term from Peter Anthony, has been engaged in "Panda Diplomacy".

"Germany. Among western countries, Germany made a conspicuous effort to expand its trade relations with China... German Chancellor Helmut Kohl visited China four times between 1989 and 1995 and a German company built a new subway system in Guangzhou, China's third largest city. Was the medal series for the Munich Coin Fairs a return gesture from China, a kind of "Panda Diplomacy"? Whatever the motive, the 1/2oz Gold 1989 Munich International Coin Fair Panda starts a sequence of Panda medals that celebrate that city's landmarks - in this case the Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame)." [Peter Anthony]

In celebration of the German Chancellor's arrival, here is a pic of the 1989 1/2oz Gold Munich Panda with original box (outside of OMP). Mintage: 1,500.
