    Rounds and Coins

Prob a stupid question, but just confirm, when people refer to Rounds, are these the same thing as coins? :/

"Rounds" are generic terms for a round unit of silver. "Coins" are a subset of these, which have a face-value as currency in a given nation. Any company can produce a 1oz round, but they're not actual currency that can be spent in a store (yet).

Rounds can also be the 1966 50 cent round pieces - which goes against what is said above, as they have a face value. But it should be easy to tell if that's what they are referring to.

50 Cent pieces are coins and not rounds.

Rounds are actually rare here in OZ, because we dont have private mints doing them.

Agree with the comments above, just a small addition.

Rounds normally refer to bullion, and CAN have a denomination ie: Silver Kooks

Coins normally are general circulation and have some numismatic value.

Ok so they are not technically 'rounds' but every coin shop I've been to in Sydney refer to them as rounds.

That's true. I think it's partly because their 'roundness' (as opposed to a normal dodecagonic 50 cent piece) is a bit of a novelty, so the word 'round' is used to describe them.

The dealers would be referring to the coins as the
' round 50 cents ' and the 'round' not used as a noun.

The responses here would have confused the newbie more. haha

    My soccer ball is round.
The term "coin" is reserved for government issue only.

But I'm sure you're reffering to bullion here.

So a bullion coin is a government issued bullion grade coin.
A bullion round is also bullion grade but not government issued.

For a side by side comparison go here:

The silver fern is a "round" and the silver taku is a Fijian issued "coin".

Why choose if you can have both. Personally I would get both coins and rounds. More rounds if you can help it because in OZ rounds quite rare compare to kook, lunar and koala.

But above coins and rounds, I suggest that you get more silver bars than coins or rounds. The premium on bars are much more make sense... your $ will go a longer way.
