    G"Day,

New to Gold coin collecting but I am looking at buying the $200 Koala series and maybe 2009 PM Soveriegn series or would my money be better spent on other older coins? any advice appreciated, Thanks

    Cheers
    Steve

    Welcome sjm,

Well from the 2 coins mentioned above, i believe that the $200 carries a lower premium.

Id suggest to buy low premium gold coins ( up to 8% over spot ), and once you have a position in gold, than
its ok to expand and look for older coins.

But for Australian buyers, the 'generic' Half Sovereigns, Sovereigns and $200 coins are the best value for money by far.

also keep track of the gold sales here on the forum, specifically the premiums at which they are advertised and how quickly they sell.

Just thought a new series, good looking coin, low mintage @ 2,500 per year but a little pricey from PM then I looked at the $200 Koalas with the $200 denomination is a good back up with some collector appeal for proof coins and four make roughly a 1oz but you would get more than spot due to proof/collector demand? maybe............

To be honest, if I was buying that sized gold right now - I'd be going for pre-1933 sovereigns (a lot move for good prices here) strictly for antique/numismatic value... or with the $200 coin's as you've mentioned.

grab 4 pre-1933 sovereigns - its nearly an ounce, and you'll not pay too high a premium for them. Besides, the benefits of holding a little bit of history is priceless :D

What price do the pre 1933 usually go for?

2009 etc Perth Mint sovereigns are not investment bullion - they're proof coins selling at a massive premium, and attract GST. $200 Koalas etc from the 1980s also attract GST from dealers, but sell at premiums closer to 5%, not 100%!

    Congrats - and welcome!

I was watching that coin as it counted down to zero, quietly wishing I had the fiat to bid (other purchases here have exhausted available funds - a common problem!)

    Beautiful looking coin!!

I have caught the collector bug more so than the investment bug! I am setting a challenge to myself to collect the entire Perth Mint Sovereign and half Sovereign series just bought a 1920 Sov and a 1926 Sov on the way and could not resist the new Sovereigns a 2010 & 2011 and looking for a 2009 at a good price:p...................

If you ever get a chance to visit the Perth Mint, in the world gold bar collection display, is the ORIGINAL 1899 Perth Mint sovereign - the very first sovereign struck at the Mint when it opened.

I started with Sovereigns, then moved to the $200.00.

I collect 1887 Sovs and George III and IV UK Sovs.

I've completed my collection of $200. There's 29 in the set. 15 of each year uncirculated and proof. The 1981 was never released as a proof coin.

If you're looking to create a full set, I have them at SPOT + $20 per coin at the moment. I think I could probably help put a set of proof together. I have the 6 Pride of Australia here in capsules (no box) and they are PROOF.
