Aka recent spam attack. Well not every "lurker" is a human being, some a bots generating traffic; other are just spamming after quite easy registration process. Topic is about the latest. Any chance to "bump" registration process a bit? Like some codes to enter with random numbers/letters etc before creating account, as to be sure that the new user is actually "alive". Would reduce spam. Just a thought.
CAPTCHA is already in place, along with a few other tricks I won't publish that have slowed them down a lot. It's cheaper to hire Indians or Filipinos to live-spam a forum now than it is to write the software to do it yourself. A lot of the spam attacks are perpetrated by outsourced individuals.
