After years of being asked by nosey tellers what im doing with my own money my stories went from buying a car to buying motorbikes to a new kitchen & various other BS stories to calm their curiosity i now use 2 lines 1... drugs are expensive these days i need to pay the bill before they shoot my house up or 2.... im having a cocaine & hooker party that usually shuts them straight up & speeds up the transaction & that teller never asks again !!!. I usually get some funny looks when i go there again.
I recently got a new account at another bank & used the coke & hookers line & the girl giggled & asked if she could come !!!! it was hilarious now we have a giggle about when the next party is on .
Better to use a bit of humour or embarressment to shut them up than abuse them.

Last year I sold one my developments and made a bit of profit, The following week I went to an auction and successfully won the auction so I went to my local Worstpac to withdraw some money to pay a deposit to the agent ( I called the day before to let the branch know), I was told that I had to give them 48 hours notice to Withdraw 100k cash or I can opt to get a bank cheque at a cost of $15 charged to me, I explained to them that the vendor accepted my bid because I offered 100k deposit in cash and not bank cheque.. So they were adamant that I had to wait 48 hours... Escalated it to the Higher power and Instead of Withdrawing 100k I withdraw 250k in $100 bills then I requested a security escort...ha ha

it amazes me that if you want to spend your money that it may be suspicious? The banks place alimit on withdrawals apparently to protect you from the crooks, but the real crooks are the banksters, turning your dollars into 25 or even 30 dollars and then having the cheek to tell you give me 48 hrs before you call. theyre all shltheads IMO

    The bigger question is:
Why are people putting thousands in the bank when they themselves complain it's hard to get access to their own money in these institutions?

My question to you (XB) is " is this your own business? or do you work on commissions? if N/A to both then I truly believe in what you are saying however, with my many years in sales I suspect (and admit only suspect) that the only reason you are enhancing their experience is to suck more money out of them and it's the whole reason why any business asks those qualifying questions. The days of innocents saying "how are you?" or "nice day" are long gone unless you know the person.

This ANZ teller is no doubt trying qualifying questions to see if they can find out where that money is going and not being polite. Did I ask her "where she had breakfast this morning?"

Mattlyndy - in my humble opinion :p I didn't abuse anybody, I just told and simple straight forward terms to a nosey person to bugger off and mind their business but I appreciate you reply

renovator - I reckon your responses are certainly the best unless they take it seriously and call the drug squad to your home whereby they may find your silver stash or should I say the stash that you don't have receipts for  then you'll have some explaining did you pay for the stash out of possible drug activities  but I like the replies and will use similar next time

    hiho - here ! here !

I don't fully understand the problem.

We make money from having money deposited in the bank. Banks make money from lending it to people.

If the bank had the money sitting in a safe they would make no profit, give no interest, and have to charge a significant fee.

If you want a safety deposit box, then get one. A bank is a different institution.

24 Hours for most transactions under 100k in cash isn't that unreasonable is it?

It is not my business - I am a humble peon in the service of my masters. I do not work on commision nor even in "sales" or "marketing" (although I do subscribe to the view that "everybody is in sales" and how you deal with a client/customer reflects on their perception of the organisation as whole)

I find a "Hi how are you" said honestly with a smile goes a long way when so many ppl nowadays cbf even acknowledging another's existence...

There are probably 5000 individual Bank branches in Australia.

If the Banks had to keep maybe $100,000 in cash in every one of them just in case, then they would tie up about $500,000,000 in cash, 365 days a year. The interest lost on that on the short term money market may well be $25,000,000 a year.

As an aside, years ago, back in the 1970's I was a teller at one of the four big banks in one of their small hand record sub-branches. Two (2) teller branch. A normal cash float for a friday was circa $70,000 and if we ran low on money, we could literally borrow it from the opposition across the road.

Fast forward to today, 35 years on, and most banks would not carry the equivalent amount without advance notice. Whether by design, or accident, plastic money, visa, mastercard, bankcard etc has replaced moneys legitimacy and been reinforced by various AUSTRAC laws. Part of the grand design perhaps?

Yes in the ideal world XB you are 100% right however, if a "bank" teller is being nosey or for that matter any body, business, cold caller etc who is trying to find out my personal business for any reason I will always say in many different flowery descriptive adjectives to mind their own business. Lets say, you keep on being a nice person and perhaps the world will change and mirror you but don't hold your breath though

I went to Batteryworld recently and bought three 12V 7Ah batteries. Seller asked what are you going to use them for?

@ XB. Sorry, but I completly identify with Hiho's stance. There is a world of difference between (1) a polite "Hi how are you" said honestly with a smile and (2) an inquiry as to what one is going to do with their own money being withdrawn from the bank.

But banks NEVER lend their own money do they. If you fully understand the fractional reserve banking system its hard to argue that all banks not criminal.

heres a fast 9min synopsis of how fraction reserve banking works for those who don't already know:)

I remember some dopey clown trying to question me when I was making a much larger than usual withdrawl. I ignored her until she tried to tell me that my money was also the banks money, { which was her attempt to justify asking a no. of questions that were none of her buissnes}. ...let's just say she won't ever forget the the spray she got!
