... but for what reason? Lol. Is it a mintage thing or a quirk factor thing? I'm not getting the sentimental or physical value.
3 X 66' round approximately 1 oz pure 999 Instead of having fraction 999, stackers using this for trading, Breaking the 1 oz into fraction to 1/3 That's why it is popular! Also cheaper way and much cheaper than fraction 999 from the dealers.
They're an aussie icon - historic (50 yrs now), cooler and shinier than non-round 50s, fractional, more wear-resistant than 999 silver, what's not to like? They're our last circulating silver coin.
I look at round 50s with the criteria of 'If I cannot sell it at full market value in a COLES car park, then i am not interested'. Most would have no idea of the real silver content and value of those coins. Could not be bothered arguing about it. Not like an ASE with "1oz .999 Silver" on it. JMO OC
Who are you selling to in carparks who knows the spot price of silver, the appropriate premium on an ASE, but knows nothing about 50s? We must frequent different ladyb.... ..never mind!
HMT, I expect car parks will feature in any black market scenario. Also walking tracks and so on, any area that is reasonably 'incognito'. JMO OC
Round fifties have additional advantages as well as was mentioned above: You can handle them and it doesn't change the price if they are scuffed and scratched. No need to store them carefully. Relatively high public visibility. People are generally familiar with them in Australia. A lot of people's dads or mates have a couple or have told them that they are worth grabbing because they are worth more than 50 cents (while not knowing anything about the silver spot price.) Good quantities around and highly liquid. You can generally pick some up from coin shops, or sell very easily. No milk spots! Basically they have proven to be a very liquid, robust store of value over the years with relatively broad public comprehension compared to bullion coins.
I agree with HoldmeTender. Also they are physically a nice size, can be handled, they store easily, easily recognisable, and are not prone to copies/fakes. For me I guess there's also some nostalgic attraction. I also like 1964 Kennedys for similar reasons.
