Thought the book deserved a discussion thread of it's own :)

Book title: (Zhongguo Xiandai Guijinshu Bizhang Tupu)
    Author:
    Published: 2011-10-1
    ISBN: 978-7-5049-5918-8

So now for the first question, does anyone know what the star system used in the book means? :)

25Grizzlies and myself think it refers to the coin rarity and availability in China.

    Thoughts?

Considering I wrote that post of course it matches my view :p

    LOL

I bought my book from Xu Hong.

Just wanted a more definitive answer than what I think it might be.

I am still waiting for my copy to arrive, all I need to do then is learn Chinese.

Just on that, would a txt recognizable PDF be able to be converted via Google translate etc... ? I know copyright etc... but if I have the book is it possible.

I know you can get an android phone and take a pic and translate that via OCR or something.

A co-worker showed me with his Galaxy Note... I have no idea the details though.

    Found it: http://lifehacker.com/5532703/google-goggles-can-now-translate-foreign-text-from-a-picture

ps. Thanks for that Shiney, the info wasn't there when I bought my book he must've updated it after lots of queries.

Okayyyy but is that rarity worldwide or is it only for China? Most of the coins we want were exported so maybe it suggests the latter. I was going to provide specific examples but I think we should be careful when discussing the ratings for a particular coin(s) here as the book has only just been released and the author deserves to sell as many copies of this excellent resource as possible.

It's entirely possible that the stars deal with desirability, keyness and general appeal.

Good thread Fish, hopefully Mr. Anthony can respond here with his thoughts on interpretation for the ratings stars.

I do not have any special insight into Mr. Ge's methodology, but as he doesn't speak English (at least not around me) it is possible that the star ratings are weighted towards coin populations in China. Whatever the case, the star ratings are interesting plus the 2-book set is a very valuable resource for mintages. At its reasonable price Mr. Ge's book(s) should be part of every collector's library.

    Best wishes,
    Peter Anthony
