So I'm skimming through the Perth Mint's mintages for the Lunar Series 1 2008 Rat silver coins. I come across the 3 coin proof set, thought I'd take a look as I have 2 of these sets. Just 75 were ever made (although they had a limit of 1,000), the lowest of the series 1 mintage for the 3 coin proof sets.

Curious as to who might know why so few were ever made and how much one might go for? Real world prices, not feebay hit and hope!

Rat in 2008 - Couldn't have anything to do with the GFC raging could it? Why would anyone be paying hefty Perth Minge premiums at a time when all hope was lost and silver bullion was cheap?

^ It could be I'm not sure. I have the 3 coin Ox and 3 coin Tiger also from series 1, and their mintages were only 87 for the Ox and 83 for the Tiger so I guess they are all worth about the same?

I sold a 3-coin 2002 Horse set a couple of months ago for $800 and that had a mintage of 278 but as for these less minted sets, I really have no idea.

Just quite surprised at such a limited number the Mint made at that time.

    Everywhere...simultaneously
My guess is that in part, because that year saw 2 lunar series Mouse coins and sets being produced (series 1 & 2) that more people purchased the new series 2 Mouse coins / sets. There are also some very low mintages of the series 2 Mouse proof coins as well.

For this and other reasons, I think that both 2008 series Mouse coins and sets are really worth acquiring....but the proofs are scarce to come by.

^ Although Series 2 Lunar coins the Perth Mint can (and has) minted more coins after the year they were issued up to their maximum mintages. Series 1 is closed with none being struck again.

    hello
i am looking for the same information how much it worth.
Set with a pig (mintage-333) was sold on ebay for 765$, set with dog(mintage-387) was sold for 650$.

IMHO set with rat with low mintage is worth 1200$.

    What do you think?

    I know a site that has a 12 coin lunar 1, 1oz Silver set for $550.
Is this a reasonable price? Features the whole animal lunar set no duplicates

It's called bid offers. The set us gone now :( but I've heard a lot of shady offers on bidoffers.
