Just wondering, which of the 1990 - present kookaburra 1oz coins attract the highest premium? I'm not too familiar with their premiums.
Damn, i just promised to swap my 1990 in the square capsule. Ahh well, i didn't like the design anyway.
Thanking you people. The PM's figures show some years with only like 90,000 coins struck. A possibility remains they can go back all the way to 1990 (although that year did reach 300k) and mint each year up to 300,000, correct ?
By far the best coin in the Kookaburra series as far as price goes is the 1990 edition. Even if its tarnished in its original square case, prices sometimes close around $100 on the bay. Most of the time they close in the upper 70s. Every once and awhile they close in the 50s for the lows. The second coin sometimes fluctuates, which would be the 1998 at times, the 1996,and even the 1995. The one coin that is playing catch-up the fastest is the 2009 KookAburra. Another coin that usually gets good premium and very hard to find at online stores is the 2008 Kookaburra. This coin is sometimes second also to the 1990 as far as premium goes. The gilded 2008 Kookaburra IMO is the flagship coin of the Kookaburra series. So in order, it goes something like this... 1. 199o Kook 2. 2008-1996-1998 3. 2009 (though wouldnt be surprised if this becomes the second best coin soon as far as premium goes) 4.1995
That's interesting re the Kookaburra prices in the US - I know they've got a big following on Kitco, but plenty of 1990 Kooks trade for regular prices in Australia! Mind you in January I scored a 1oz Lunar Dragon in a US coin shop for spot plus $5. To them it was just another coin in the "Perth Mint" container. Shows there's some serious localisation with different numismatics. Pretty sure I've got five beautifully toned 1998 Kooks kicking around
@ goldpelican: ... the website you were talking about is in fact http://www.silber-corner.de , which is a popular online PM - Store around here. They managed to get the PM to mint quite a lot of Kooks from previous years which haven't reached their 300k - limit yet. That kind of annoyed a lot of Kook - Fans here as the prices for a lot of Pre-2008 dropped a lot. They've got some 1 oz - Kooks still on stock, see link below : http://www.silber-corner.de/de/Kookaburra-Silber They now even started to sell newly minted 2 oz - Kooks from previous years : http://www.silber-corner.de/de/Silber/2-Oz
In the Perth Mint brochures they say all current 2 oz coin mintage will end on at the end of the year. At least we know now why they did not have the capacity for the 2 oz rabbit. When they made the last three lunar S1 years they still had the decency to mint the correct date on them, but with the kooks they declared the final mintage on their website while making them in the other room. We should just order the S1 dragon instead of waiting for the S2. On lage order for $1 extra Perth Mint probably would do it. This is very disturbing.
Looks like none of the series I lunar 1oz reached 300k limit, that's so bad for people holding onto them for numismatic value (if they decide to churn more out). Glad I only bothered with a few proofs and didn't pay crazy premiums for them. Quite surprised about this to be honest, thought they wouldn't mint the old kooks again :|. At least with Koalas you're safe though, since they'd rather churn current year Koalas since unlimited mintage, finally a benefit to koalas!? Guess I won't be bidding on Kooks anymore on eBay Edited for more info: The response also avoided mentioning 2oz coins, only 10oz and Kilos would not be minted again so I guess 2oz can be re-minted until mintage level reached? They might not make the earlier kooks as they have a $5 face value while the later ones only have a $1 face value. Then again if it means making a bit more fiat I wouldn't put it past em.
Regarding the 1oz Lunars, the Perth Mint has said before that Series 1 in closed, no more will be minted, full stop, thats it.
Here is from a very recent eBay auction: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=370525672589&index=2&nav=SEARCH&nid=43559286582
Hello, I am new at this forum, and I will ask you if 31 is a good price to buy silver 1 oz. Kookaburra from 2008? Thanks for your answers
